I Hated Lawyers

And then I grew up.

I watched a criminal defense attorney, who knew up front that he was whipped, go into court and give his client the best defense he was entitled to under the Constitution. After several years of hating defense lawyers, I finally got it. This guy didn't have it in for me, wasn't trying to make me look foolish, didn't hate cops. He was just doing his job.

Later on, I had occasions to hire lawyers. Several, in fact. I hope I never need another lawyer, but checks I have written in a law office were some of the best money I ever spent.

Anyone who hates lawyers hasn't needed one yet.

    Simpler than writing it all over again.

    A few things to ponder:
    1. The attorneys that I know that advertise usually have the best and most legitimate cases of all. They get hundreds of calls per week, and they can pick the cream of the crop.
    2. I don't want to take a bad case. Why? Becuase if it is a contingent case, if I don't win, I don't get paid. Why would I waste my own time and money on a bad case?
    3. Everyone else's lawyer is a shyster; my lawyer isn't, until he sends me his bill. Then he was in cahoots with the other attorney, sold me out, etc.
    4. There are sanctions for frivolous lawsuits. Loosing a lawsuit doesn't mean that it was frivolous.
    5. Nothing is every black and white. I just had a person in my office over a property line dispute. Everyone agrees where the survey lines are, there are no mistakes in the deeds, but one person says that for years the parties have used the trees as the property line, so the parteis have essentially agreed to the new line. Guess what? That position is not entirely without merit.
    6. It's not that the lawmakers are attorneys. It's that they are politicians. It's hard to balance "justice" as a concept with the need to get re-elected.

    Here's a perfect example. My client bought a motor home made by company X from Dealership Y. I sued the manufacturer under the Magnusson Moss Warranty Act, because the first year he had it, it was in the shop for 10 months. I won, the other side appealed, and GM filed an Amicus brief with the Court (GM wasn't a party to the case, but GM was afraid of me winning and making law that woudl be "bad" for GM). Their argument is that if the court holds a manufacturer liable under the MMWA, even though the purchaser didn't get it directly from the manufacturer, "it would be devistating to the manufacturer, especially when Michigan is losing manufacturing jobs to foreign states and countries". In other words, "you find against me, I'll take my ball and go home".

    I recognize that there are lawyers out there who are good and decent men and women honestly seeking truth and justice and that in many cases a good lawyer is an absolute necessity, but the fact remains that America would be a better place if we randomly (dis-barred) nine out of ten of the lawyers in the country.

    I thought I was stupid then I read this thread. Lawyers are the last line of defense between cops and corporate america going heywire over us little guys. And if you believe that line of horse manure from the "insurance adjuster" above, then I pray for you when you have a claim from one of them. Insuarance companies are at the root of all evil and will do everything they can to keep from paying a claim. Then they have the sack to stand up and yell frivolous and disparage lawyers what an obvious line of crap. I speak cause I have been through it with these adjusters. I had to get a lwyer cause they wanted to pay me half the value of my truck when I got tboned at no fault of my own. I got a lawyer friend to help me and he made ONE PHONE call and my truck was paid for.

    Its the insrance companies and adjusters you better watch out for. Kill all the lawyers and see how you do as a little guy. Think people! dont be so brainwashed by the insurance companies!Damn straight.

    I do like that idea.


    I neglected to mention that the specific target of his action was the then governor of the state George Corley Wallace. Still the idea has a great deal of merit. They could still run for office but they would have to resign from the bar in order to serve & then pass the Bar Exam again in order to practice law after they leave office.
    This should greatly reduce the stranglehold lawers currently have over our society.
    My daughter disagrees since her husband is an attorney.

    Jgreen ...Does your Police Dept. charge you money to dispense their service? I paid the Doctor $20 to go in and get help from him. Last Lawyer I had to deal with charged me $5000 to write 2 letters! ...My statement about being blood suckers stands!
    ...SO I gotta ask, what do you do for a living?

    Accually I like attorney's since I have to deal with them every day.
    The District attorney is an "attorney", he represents me in court cases. He's acually my boss, not immediate, but up at the top.
    The ones I feel sorry for are public defenders, sometimes they are afraid to talk to some of the scary people we arrest. I don't think they get paid that great either.

    Actually, the police do charge, sometimes over and above what they get paid in taxes. And I don't begrudge them.

    And OJ, if you paid an attorney $5000 for 2 letters, (and who knows what kind of letters they were, you didn't say, and you didn't say whether he was contingent or you paid him a flat fee) I wouldn't be blaiming the attorney. I'd be looking in the mirror.

    So, I gotta ask, what kind of letters were these?
