If it has bugged you for years, as the post in ask the experts stated, then why on earth havent you contacted Smith and Wesson to get the answer?...Or at least asked in any number of S&W forums?...

I had noticed symbols on some S&W barrels but never thought much about them. Now that I am looking at some of my revolvers, I can only find them on a pre-model 17 4 screw.

I have no idea what they may represent - I always though it was just there for the heck of it.
I noticed symbols more on Colt revolvers than on S&W's.
