Question about Hoppes #9

I'm getting ready to take a trip in a few weeks. I may have to case my guns and keep them in the car for a few days while I travel. I don't want condensation (hot/cold temp changes) to cause rust.

I'm swabbing the bores with patches soaked in Hoppes #9, coating all other metal surfaces with Rem Oil and I'm tossing them in Bore Stores silicone-treated gun sleeves (good heavy-pile cloth).

Is it safe to leave Hoppes #9 in the bore that long? The front of the bottle says it prevents rust. I got the solvent on the "directions" portion of the label and smeared the ink. Is it safe? Will it prevent rust as advertised?

    I would say Yes.Hoppes is kind of mild compared to other stuff out there. Oil would be better. Just remember to run a couple of dry patches thru them before use, whatever you decide. Have a good trip.

    I have a new Sendero and a new Remington 700 XCR and a new T/C Omega. I'm concerned most about those. I just want to make sure it's okay to leave the Hoppes in there for a month or so

    get a bottle of Gibb's Oil and run a wet patch down the bore. Then forget about it.

    Use Birchwood-Casey Sheath. My 700 has been in a case for the last 4 years, no rust. All I did was wipe it down with Sheath.

    The stuff is not going to hurt the bore, but it is a poor rust preventive agent at best. It's for cleaning, not preserving, so you would be better off with the Rem Oil, or much better off with RIG, in the bore.

    I am trying to get this done this week. My week is going to be hectic so I won't have time to buy different cleaning products and I don't want to leave oil in the barrel if I don't have to.

    Ed Brown Custom recommends leaving Hoppes #9 in the bore for storage because it contains kerosene which will protect the bore from rust like oil. However, I've seen conflicting opinions on the internet. I don't want to swab the bore with something that will leave a heavy residue or an oil that will be difficult to remove. I don't want something that will leave a permanant coating in the bores. I'd like to go with the Hoppes if it's absolutely safe.

    As of very late, I've been using a relatively new 3-step product (cleans-lubricates-protects) called EEZOX. It's a bit pricey but it dries and leaves behind a dry film. Several on-line reviews and posts touted its overall effectiveness and non-oily characteristics.

    A patch soaked with remoil, and then a couple of dry patches, you'll have no problems.

    Okay, I've been shooting for more than a day. I've been cleaning and lubing and protecting firearms from rust for more than a handfull of years. I know what all those other products do and have used most of them at one point or another or have them currently in my possession.

    I am asking about one product--Hoppes #9.

    A patch soaked with remoil, and then a couple of dry patches, you'll have no problems.

    I thought it eats aluminum parts- if you have any, and it dribbles onto them and doesn't get cleaned off. I could be wrong.

    What he said, but I use Eezox instead for any storage or high dampness activity. It's dry so you can shoot without any prep, and it's a very good rust inhibitor.

    I would use Hoppes. It will work just fine.

    You'll be alright with just the Hoppes #9 in the bore!
    No need to buy any other product.
    Spend the rest of your time on other preparations and enjoy your trip.

    Use Hoppe's Elite Gun oil.

    Use breakfree, then you won't have to smell #9 [xx(] which is not a great rust preventative.

    Hoppe's No. 9 can be left in the bore indefinitely (though it will eventually evaporate), and it will not cause any problems. Be sure to wipe it out with a clean patch before shooting.

    One can argue about better/best but I would be TOTALLY SHOCKED if:

    a. Any bore coated in Hoppes #9 rusted (the stuff is petroleum based and repels water), or

    b. The stuff hurt your bore in any way (the stuff is petroleum based and designed specifically to clean guns).

    Breakfree CLP will keep them in mint shape while on your trip. Its been tried and proven many times by me and its some good stuff. Have a safe trip.
