M1A/.308 Ammo

According to the owners manual on my M1A, there is a risk of having a "slam-fire" if civilian .308 ammo is used in it.

Has anyone actually heard of it happening?

    Any firearm with the inertia type firing pin has this as a possibility, in my experience this is very very rare. This may happen with "soft" commercial primers but I have used most brands of primers and have never has a problem. This warning is mostly for the legal liability of the mfg of the gun. I would really not be worried about it.

    Military primers are harder then standard rifle primers. I have shot thousands of round of reloaded, standard primer, rounds in military rifles and never had a slam fire. If you rifle is pointed in a safe direction as they always should be an AD will not be an issue.

    I have 4 Springfield M1A's. I had a slam fire once with one of them.

    It happened when I dropped a round in the chamber and let the bolt go manually with no magazine in place. With no mag to slow the bolt speed, it fired the round. It was pointed safely with no one hit. I dont recall what type of primer it was.

    Since most US military rifles dont have spring loaded firing pins this is always a possibility. Anytime your chambering a round, the gun should always be pointed in a safe direction in case a slam-fire occurs.

    I have fired thousands of rounds of ammo with both military primers and the commercial softer primers in my guns with only this one slam-fire. It can happen with either type primer, but is much more likely with the softer commercial version.

    As previously mentioned, its more of a liability thing that the warning is printed in the manual.
