Question about LEO and off duty carry
does a deputy sheriff need a concealed carry license to carry a handgun concealed while off duty?

per federal law all LEO's can CCW anywhere in the country without regard to the concealed carry laws of whatever state they are in. No license is needed, just a department ID / badge. Some people I have known carry a photocopy of the law in their wallet in case they run into some butthead who doesn't know the law and wants to hassel them. 0 -

I'm a reserve officer because of being a SWAT Medic. I shouldn't need my CCW but I still get one. In fact I just sent in my lifetime Indiana CCW today.

If they are in their own state then they are an officer 24/7.
Most of the ones I know don't have one on them off duty, in the car yes. It's funny, I carry more times than they do when we are not in uniform.0 -
MVP- as above. Go to the criminal code for your state, read the concealed weapons statue. There is an exception there for law enforcement officers. Does not say "on duty/ off duty" You are LEO 24/7. The new Fed law allows carry in any state by LEO. 0 -

Good for you and shame on them. I wonder why they don't carry off duty. Never mind that it is their right. It is their duty. I'm sure their oath is pretty the same as mine and it doesn't specify that you serve only while on the clock.
Heck at my Dept. if you are caught out without a firearm and you are not consuming alcohol you get verbally reprimanded. The boss has told everyone to carry at all times. The only reason you don't formally disciplined is because he doesn't want to intrude too much into our personal lives. If I were the boss I don't think that would matter much to me. You either take your oath seriously or not.0 -

This is true that LEO's need no permit, but do need their ID. The NC. State Police would not allow their Officers to carry off Duty until 5 or so yrs ago. 0
