SHTF
Are we there yet?[?]

How did this term come into being?
I mean really, when does it it even come in contact with a fan? Why?0 -
In all my years of trying to truly be prepared for SHTF while living what I consider a relatively normal life, I still don't feel adequately prepared for even the most probable scenarios.
The four main areas are:
Water
Food
Shelter
Security
Right?
I have most of that covered for all but the most unlikely of circumstances but still feel there is more I could do to prepare.
How well do you feel you are prepared?
Mostly it's not if, but when. So mostly I'm putting a lot of trust in the good Lord above to help me, as he always has in every situation I have ever found myself in. Still feel I need to do my part to the best of my abilities, ya know?
Anyone else feel this way?0 -
[:D] I'm just wondering which shoes you all will be wearing when SHTF. Lace ups or pull on boots? Maybe Zombie blasting tennis shoes?!? 0 -
MRE's showed up yesterday. December 2010 run, complete with heaters.
Have 8 more cases showing up in about two weeks.0 -

I'd imagine somebody just sat down and said "What's the nastiest thing I can think of?".
Coming up with the great and ubiquitous ca-ca as his answer, he then pondered "What could I do to possibly make this nastiest thing even nastier?".
I'd imagine that's the point at which he thought of throwing it into a fan and thus spreading it all over the room, taking it from bad to atrocious.0 -

Here's what Partridge has to say in his Dictionary of Catch Phrases (1977):
when bababooey (generic) (or the bababooey (specific)) hits the fan : also then the bababooey'll hit the fan; and the bababooey hit the fan; and then the bababooey hits the fan, apparently the predominant US form. Douglas Leechman says that it is 'a c.p. indicative of grave or exciting consequences': Canadian and US: since c. 1930. 'Wait till the major hears that! Then the bababooey'll hit the fan!' Dr Leechman adds that 'the allusion is to the consequences of throwing this material into an electric fan'. But the original reference, as Norman Franklin in March 1976 reminds me, is to the agricultural muck-spreader.
He doesn't, unfortunately, give us any reason to think his good buddy Norman knew what he was talking about, so take the muck-spreader idea for what it's worth.
Wentworth & Flexner ["A Dictionary of American Slang"] cite an anecdotal origin [remembered independently by Robert Claiborne, Prof. Anthony Brown, and Paul Beale, covering mid 1930s - mid '50s], which is perhaps valid: a guest, unable to find the w.c., uses a hole in the bathroom floor and on rejoining the party, is asked, 'Where were you when the bababooey hit the fan?'0 -
It's really just more mainstream than "hammered dog bababooey", "a bag of smashed azzholes", etc. Origins are really unimportant but I would imagine they are all from American descent. 0 -

I was told by a usually reliable source, that during WWII, for a span of about 10 minutes, there WAS really a Supreme Headquarters, Italian Theater. [:p] 0 -
I seem to remember a C & W song from the '60's or '70's titled "Where were You When The Fit Hit The Shan". "I was up here standin' on dry land".
