I'm in the process of scanning over a hundred years worth of photos to disk. This morning I came across a drawing of my bride of forty-three years. It was signed by Billy E. Burgess and dated 1963. I didn't recall the drawing being made, so I asked who is Billy E. Burgess. She looked at the drawing and said "Oh, that was one of those "Beach Artists" at Myrtle Beach.

Me: "Well, the boy does good work."
Her: "Yeah, but I don't think it looks like me, do you?
Me: Yeah, you were really pretty back then.

She didn't say anything, but gave me one of those "I'm going to kill you" looks. I knew right away that she didn't hear what I meant to say.

Me: "I didn't mean you're not pretty now. I just meant you were a lot younger then."
    Her: Just a stare.
Me: "I didn't mean you're all that old. I just meant you were younger in 1963."
    Her: Just a stare.
    Me: "Old is good."
Her: "Why don't you just shut up? Everything you say just makes it worse."

Lesson learned: From now on when I want to complement the wife, I think I'll just exercise my right to remain silent.

I never talk to my wife without my lawyer...

I think you have a whole lot of butt kissing to do, along with a whole bunch of gifts to get to even get close to being forgiven...*LOL

I don't think a lawyer could have gotten me out of this one. Now that I think about it, even in hindsight, I was doomed as soon as she said "Yeah, but I don't think it looks like me, do you?

The only realistic chance I had was to drop the subject as soon as she told me who Billy E. Burgess was. Unfortunately I didn't see that at the time.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger there James. I did something similar the other night by slip of the tongue, and it was pretty quiet for a while around the house, even after I apologized. Sometimes you just can't win.

It's kind of like the old joke about the "Freudian slip"

The other night I was just sitting at the dining room table and what I meant to say was "Would you please pass the mashed potatoes?'

Instead I made a little "Freudian Slip" and said..

"You wicked bitch, you've ruined my life!"

The funny thing is that in my house the roles are reversed. I say lots of obnoxious things because that is what I do. My GF says something that comes out wrong and doesn't know when to quit.

James I think you should just forgive her. It would help if she bought you flowers. Never say you are sorry, it is a sign of weakness that will be exploited.
