Berkeley
Just back from a 35 year reunion weekend of sorts. My old apartment house was gone, as were most of my old haunts. Still had the tie dye and herb street vendors and head shops on Telegraph, though. And Moe's Books was still there, but it looked like a friggin' Borders now. Campus was trashy, with campus and city cops everywhere. Students walking around Sunday morning were mostly Asian.
Thomas Wolfe was right.

Yeah, and you don't even wanna run into that little hippy chick Rita, either... 0 -
Didn't you get your PhD in philosophy from Berkeley?
Did the campus look worse, or had the chemicals of youth just twisted the memories? [;)]0 -
You went to Berkeley?
That explains SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much about you.0 -
I decided that I couldn't "go home" last year and skipped my 35th, but I had been back a few times for various reasons.
I found the same thing. The apartment was gone; most of the stores and places to eat were torn down or under new management, though that was not unexpected after 35 years. There were only a couple of people still around from a different time, and somewhat different world.
I do believe John "X", who was a junior when I got there, and still hadn't graduated when my group left, was still taking classes, but I might be mistaken.
Hope you had a good time and enjoyed looking for the old haunts, even if most are now gone, or occupied by those in whom we do not see ourselves.
My visits evoked some fond and some sad memories, but quickly reminded me just how fortunate I am to be where I am now. That alone made the experience worth the effort.0 -
Is the Kingfish still there?
