Is real mace, not pepper spray, legal to own? I ask because a friend of a friend is terrified of guns but wants to carry some sort of protection.

My friend is a young lady as is her friend,who was recently sexually molested.I did bring up the possibility of teaching her to shoot,don't know if it will ever happen though,that's why the question about mace. Laws vary from state to state, but consider OC (pepper) spray. It works a lot better than Mace on MOST people. and isn't as damaging on the user if they get hit by it, either from wind, or splash back.
Nothing is 100% effective, but the pepper spray has a better rate.

Pepper spray (10% OC) is more effective on MOST people than MACE (tear gas in a petrroleum base). Fewer restrictions on possessing OC than true MACE. Check YOUR state laws. NOTHING is 100% effective, withe POSSIBLE exception of a flamethrower and nuclear weapons. trust me when i say i have experienced mace, and oc spray first hand several times, i have been sprayed, i have seen people sprayed, i have even used it, not one incident was it effective, not one, sure it burns like hell, but only after you calm down, it is like getting kicked in the nuts in a fight, you may not feel it then but you may spend the next day on the couch, i once had a woman spray one of my bouncers, he knocked the crap out of her, and had no problem working the rest of the night, i also have had mace blow in my face once while testing the pattern, it was uncomfortable but that was all, i also used it during a small riot once, then got assaulted by a guy that got it full force in the face,{then i broke his nose, and cheek bones}
it will lead to a false sense of security, and will not disable an attacker, they will be more pizzed off, than they where in the first place0 -

I've got 23 years in with the Sheriff's Dept.
We used to use Mace, and then switched to pepper spray. I've used both on plenty of people, and the pepper seems to be more effective.
I've also used pepper where the person sprayed looked at me like I was nuts for doing it, and wiped it off their face like it was water.
Nothing is 100% effective. Not even shooting someone.
A person may be mortally wounded, and still have enough energy to attack.0 -

completely disregard this information. the only people who rate oc based on percentage of pepper are the people who sell or buy it on ebay. real oc is rated by shu(scoville heat units) or the potentcy of the pepper. 10%oc might only be rated at 1mil shu or less while, for example, fox labs is 2%oc and is rated at 5.3mil shu.

Some tips for using mace or pepper spray:
1. While it is spicy, do not use it as a food additive.
2. If you won't pi$$ in the wind, don't spray in the wind. The effect is the same, you'll be covered in the s&^t.

I kind of liked the idea of the pepper/gas spray that was like gel.. with some sort of dye in it.
Besides getting the friggin' stuff all over the face - the perp also needs to wait about a week before the dye has dissapeared enough..
I guess the best thing is to first find some neat little, nonfrightening gun. Tell her you'd teach her the basics, just in case...

Teach her the basics - so she'd know what to do with a gun.
It doesn't take much for frightened people to block completely off and even take steps back..
Start off easy, and just teach her the basics. Don't ask her to own a gun, carry it or anything.
Tell her she might not need a gun with her, but she would do good with the knowledge.
When she has taken a bit to it and gotten confident, even accepted or isn't frightened of guns anymore.. take up the question about her owning a gun, neatly locked away.

When I was a Paramedic our Sheriff's Dept. switched from mace to pepper spray.
Every deputy had to get sprayed in the face. They showed up wearing shorts and t shirt. They had an ambulance stand by, so I got to watch.
I saw some damn big, 25 year old weight lifter deputies knocked to their knees, and crying for their momma after a little squirt of pepper spray in the face. That made a believer out of me.
These big cops hit the dirt and tears and snot were gushing from their faces. They had to wash their faces for 20 minutes with a garden hose, and they still were not right.
I have right here the 2 oz BodyGuard LE10 Stream pepper spray. I got it from Universal Police Supply of Tempe Arizona. On occasion, I carry this in my car. The good thing about the stream, vs. spray, is the stream will go pretty straight, even with a wind. This stuff squirts out about 12 feet in a bold stream.
Any of y'all who deride the effectiveness of this stuff, I would like to give you a little spritz of the LE10 right between the eyes, and see how tough you are.0 -

Well he's not losing any credibility with me, I work at a hospital, we had a large man brought into our ICU He was bad off, when the officers tried to use the restraints to tie him down to the bed the man actually bent both handrails on the bed trying to fight back, they injected him with something like Haldol? or some name and he still fought, the nurses were amazed and said surely within minutes he would stop, it took a second injection and he was still combative, finally after about 15 minutes he settled down, but still was not out as they thought he should have been. Surely we could have kicked him in the nuts and it would nothave stopped him, I have no idea what he was on if anything but this man was a bad ass!0 -
i have had it happen twice, spent the next day on the couch, but did some serious harm to the other guys

I tend to agree with the fellow who pointed out that when high or quite motivated, significant pain can be ignored.
There's a video on youtube of some dumb teenager out in AZ who took a bet that he wouldn't run down the street shoeless for 50 yards. Keep in mind that this is AZ in the summer, and the street is blazing hot. Well, this kid, apparently stone sober, runs the fifty yards and then collapses on the sidewalk. A neighbor drives him back, and the skin on the bottom of his feet is literally falling off in sheets.
His motivation was to win $100. You take a fellow who is about to be caught and go to prison for 20 years or who wants to beat up somebody who has wronged him and add in a whole lot of heroin or booze, that person will ignore all kinds of pain. I once had my nose broken while wrestling in PE class. I was trying to be tough and bad and everybody was cheering and I kept right on wrestling. I had it broken again years later goofing around with my brother, and I sat right down and couldn't stand up for a few minutes.0 -

I carry an MK4 at work, which is 18%, some bad stuff. You can get a can from First Denfense called X2, which is 40%. This stuff is effective, but like others have said its not 100%. The studies show that 7% of the population is unaffected by OC, matter of fact there is a guy who works with us in that small percentage. I'd recommed something with a form of tear gas, if she's dead set on only relying on spray. 0 -
I have seen about 30 guys get hit in the nuts. These were tough football players, karate guys, and just guys fighting in the street. Four times, I myself have gotten hit there.
Every time the result was the same, the guy was on the ground.
I don't believe someone who says they can get kicked in the nuts and it not faze them.0 -

everyone reacts different, i'm not the only one, i learned long time ago a kick to the groin is not a guarantee on everyone, if this was the case we really would not need any other method of self defense

Just as with shooting a gun, Mace or OC spray are only effective if used correctly. If it is simply sprayed into the air in the general directon of the hostile who is still many yards away, the effect will be minimal. The proper technique is to spray a stream (not a mist) and strike the hostile in the forehead. The liquid then runs down his face into his eyes and keeps on coming. 0 -

If someone is scared of guns, they are scared of guns. Nothing is foolproof. If they would carry this pepper spray, they would be protected in most cases. No self defense system is foolproof, but good pepper spray is damn good.0 -

I can remember when we used mace before OC and most LEO's hated it. No one wants to have to use a chemical deterrence to subdue someone, but on occasion its a must. Mace wasnt the choice of most LEO's, I remember the days before OC you could hit a perp with mace and put him in the back of the cruiser and by the time you reached the jail your eyes would be almost swollen shut, and you would be nearly foaming at the mouth yourself. Mace dissipates into the air and your cruiser doesnt have alot of space. I would roll down the front windows shut the plexi glass in front of the cage and it would still nearly choke you to death. When OC became the chemical of choice, I for one as Im sure Nunn and other LEO's here can tell you. We were all very happy with it, it doesnt dissipate into the air plus it seems to work better than mace. 0
