Jury duty

Well it seems like i have been called again. I am 51 and this is the second time i have been called.

The first time they kicked me off the panel.

2 black men rapped and killed a white woman and i was for the death penalty so they dismissed me.[V]

    It would be fun to serve.

    I have NEVER been picked, as a matter of fact, the last two times I was called the judge saw me there and cut me loose...

    Half joking, half speculation. I have no idea what sort of questions that they will even ask me. I'll follow the advice in the link from Highball and not offer too much information. The more I think about it the more I want to do it.

    I've been called several times, but no dice when they find out what I do for a living. It always ends up just being a waste of everyone's time.

    I remember showing up to hear final arguments in a local murder case that had been investigated by the Sheriff's Dept. When I walked in the courtroom I saw that the Sheriff's wife was a juror.

    It's luck-of-the-draw on the pool that attorneys are handed, but how she didn't get struck is beyond me.

    The ballot box is self-explainetory..and today the process is so corrupted as to be useless in retaining a free country.

    The Jury Box was next..and after the debacle of Prohibition, judges and lawyers went to a full court press to prevent information about jurors' responsibility to not only judge the lawbreaker.but the LAW.from being freely circulated.nullifying a tremendous tool in the hands of ordinary citizens.

    No...the cartridge box.

    That may well lead to that 'pine box'...but there is no shame dying for freedom...fighting tyranny.
    The shame is in submitting..so one may live with his cowardice each day...

    Sav99, It really doesnt matter who or what you are during jury selection, as each side will be looking for "specific characteristics" of potential jurors to help them "win" the case. I have been on two, both criminal cases, I am lucky though as my employer is required to pay my wage. Good luck, from what I've seen you post, I think you would enjoy the experience and challenge.

    I am currently on standby for federal jury duty. I was notified to appear, and the night before I had to call a 800 number and they told me not to come in. Still waiting on my next notice if I get one at all.

    The difference with a Federal Jury was they fed us. They lined us up like school kids & walked us from the Federal Building in L.A. to Chinatown while we were in deliberations. Since they cover a larger area they also pay for lodging if you have to come over a certain distance.

    To Sarge: Your calling completed your jury duty obligation. Same as if you were told to report, and sat through a trial. You're classified as "finished with jury duty"..and taken out of the call sequence. You're not on standby. Joe

    I guess I wasn't aware of that. I thought that if you were picked to serve on any jury duty, say for 6 months, then you could be called at any time over a certain period of time.

    I've been called up 4 times in my lifetime
    Last time was 3 weeks before my retirement.
    Timing is everything.

    I will not serve on a jury!
    Why should i spend a day of my life because somebody got into trouble or someone decided to sue another?
    As I work out of town/state most of the time they (the court system) has never pressed it issue.
    I say let the jokers that don't work (the a@@es that we support) sit on the jury. It seems it's mostly their kind that in the court system anyway.

    Not true in all locales. My county has 20K residents and when we get put on Jury Duty, we're on call for a year. Might not get called at all, or might get called more than once. I'm currently on call for another six months. This is my second on-call year in under 5 years.

    Edit: when I've lived in more populous jurisdictions, jury duty has been just that one day that I was summoned. It's a trade-off: here, I get plenty of advance notice that I may or may not get called in the next year. There, I got little notice, but it was a one-time deal.

    Because if you are ever accused of a crime, you want an intelligent panel of your peers to weigh the merits of the case against you?

    I probably can't get on a jury, since I believe in jury nullification. If it is a seat belt case or a motorcycle helmet case, I am voting "not guilty" before I hear any facts. If it is a child custody case, I am siding with the father. If it is a HOA case, I will side with the homeowner. Those are my prejudices; if you don't like them, don't let me on the jury.

    As the Horn case. Were I sitting on that jury, if it goes to trial...the only possible verdict is 'Not Guilty'..and a round of applause for Mr. Horn.

    In the past 14 years, I have been called twice, and served once.

    I'm not sure which was worse, traffic school or jury duty, as far as the level of intelligence of the people around you.

    I don't like the current practice of drawing the jury pool from the list of licensed drivers. It was bad enough when we only selected from the list of registered voters. Now, many morons are called to jury duty, and as most morons have no life, they are thrilled to do it. That's how O.J. got off.

    I propose that juries only be selected from a pool of volunteers, people who maybe are retired, or otherwise have time to serve without hurting their employers or businesses. Further, those volunteers should be tested for basic intelligence and mental stability, as well as competence in English.

    Not if I'm guilty I don't. I want people with the same intellegence level of the O.J. jury.

    Interesting thread. I just got notified that I start Jury Duty on 1/4/08. We serve here for 1 month unless you get grand jury whcih is two months. We call in daily at 5:00pm and find out if our number has been called if so it is off to the court house the next day. I was called for a grand jury in a town quite a bit bigger than where I live now and it was disgusting. I was put on a grand jury for crimes against children. Bad experience and it really made me sick. I did not get much sleep for quite awhile.

    Like Spurgemaster I live in a small county. I am eligible for jury duty from Oct. 1 until Mar 30 of next year. Got a call from a sheriff deputy last night. My nubmer came up, I report Monday (10) at 8:30. My wife works for one of the lawyers in town so I can find out what trials are due up next week. I personnaly like it, as I served on 3 juries when I lived in St. Louis years ago. It's just that I am pretty busy at work right now.
