i talked to a local leo today and he told me they are changing pistols from .45 to the xd .40 in his opinion, it sucks.
leos...what do they do with your old guns when you change over?

When my department switched from revolvers to 9mm, then again from 9mm to .40, all of our guns were traded in to the Glock representatives. From there, they get wholesaled out to other dealers and then sold either on the public market, or to other agencies that don't have the $$ for new guns. 0 -
I imagine laws have changed these days
but years ago when my dad was a cop
"his" dept was constantly getting
new firearms (in those days revolvers)
and really good deals from ruger
and smith because they would buy back
the "used" weapons, being used they
were now able sell them to whoever
out of the country.Story goes from
one of the salesmen that to get around
the laws in effect the weapons had to be
used to be sold abroad but that was in the
mid 60's and I'm sure that has changed

one of the reasons i asked is that my boss said his mother in law is a leo and said that they can option to buy their pistols. he said he could ask her to get several for us if we wanted. something tells me that none of it is true. 0 -
This was true "back in the days". Now, they have to do a NICS check on everyone (even cops), and most manufacturors representatives aren't interested in spending the time and paperwork to do it. Before that, they would take your money, and hand you the gun(s). 0 -

My agency has changed once. Went from the Beretta 92 9mm, to the Beretta 8040 Cougar .40.
We had the option of buying our duty gun at a very fair price. Those not purchased, were traded to the vendor for a reduction in price of the bulk 8040's.
The 92's were resold on the open market by the vendor.[;)]
We are transitioning through attrition to Glocks now. No decision has been made on the Cougars yet, but they are not made anymore and we will probably get the option to buy them. Doesn't really matter, since we are authorized to carry personal weapons, under certain criteria.
Many of us carry 1911's.
I just picked up 2 Colt's from a police auction in Northern Arizona. The Williams Police Department went to a different gun and auctioned off their primary and backup pistols. They sold their Colt 1911's and other Colt pistols to support a shooting organization.
I scored a very nice nickel Colt, Series 70 and a Colt Mustang Pocketlite in .380.[^]0 -
When we went from Smith Model 66 to Glock 9mm there was a push to let us buy the 66's. But that didn't happen because the local gun stores complained. So the Model 66 that I carried for over twenty years went somewhere, but not with me, when I left. 0 -
We switched last yr fro the SIG P-229 to the SIG P-229 DAK, our old guns which were many were sold by Sealed Bid. I can understand the LEO not liking the switch,we as people sometimes dont want to change. I think in the end he will end up loveing the XD its a great gun. 0
