    I'd take the 40 for fear of overpenetration.

    I'm no expert, but if you're worried about penetration, I'd get a shotgun instead.

    I own a S&W 686+, which is of course .357 Magnum. And I, too have a wife and kids at home (not to mention several 4-legged family members who I wouldn't want injured either). But I can't afford a shotgun right now, nor do I have a way to safely store it AND easily retrieve it if necessary.

    But maybe your circumstances are different. Maybe try one of those new revolvers that can load shot shells in it, as well? I think I saw an ad for one in the latest NRA magazine....

    12ga high brass #6 bird shot will work just fine.

    148 gr. hollow base wadcutter loaded backwards ahead of 3 gr bulleye in model 60 S&W. At 25 feet will blow the hell out of plastic milk jug full of water but doesn't have an exit hole.

    The .357sig loaded with 125gr HP's are my first choice. Then I would choose the .40 S&W 135 gr Corbon or Winchester Ranger LE ammo. Right in the same league IMHO is the .45acp loaded with Federals 185GR +P Expanding Full Metal jacket. Which ever one you choose requires good shot placement most of all.
