took a Hound to the Pound
I was driving down Little Pine road this morning. I saw a big old hound dog walking down the road. This is way out in the country in the mountains of North Carolina.
This was a big white hound, with floppy ears and a big black splotches all over. He had a green collar, no tag. He also had a radio tracking device on a red collar. This was a black box about 4 inches long and an inch wide. An antenna of 12 inches stuck out,looked like 1/4 inch steel cable.
This dog was in rough shape. His ribs were sticking out. He had cuts and bruises on his legs and his nose.
He was a very sweet natured dog. He came right up to me and was glad to jump into my truck, passenger's seat. He started sniffing at an empty plastic pack of beef jerky.
There was no phone number on this dog's collars.
I have a dog and two cats. I have no way to take care of another dog.
I gave the dog a 14 ounce can of Alpo that I keep in my truck for situations like this. He gobbled it down.
I took the dog down to Animal Control. They had me sign a statement, releasing custody of the dog to them, plus a statement that as far as I knew that the dog had never bitten anyone.
I live in a very small town. I posted a notice at the local grocery store about the dog.
This afternoon I called Animal Control. They said that so far, no one had claimed the dog. They said, it is forbidden by law for them to remove a radio tracking collar. They said, it is forbidden for them to adopt out a dog with such a collar. It also is forbidden for them to euthanize such a pet. They hoped the owner would show, they didn't know what to do with such a dog. They said they might run an ad in the paper.

Glad that you got the dog off the highway and to the pound. Someone is missing this dog because he has about $200.oo worth of electronics on his collar. Hounds can run a good distance. Sometimes they will run past the range of the tracking collar. If you know any houndsmen in the area, contact them so they can put the word out about the location of the dog.
Now let me explain hounds. They almost always look rough after a few hunts. They are running through briar thickets, over stumps, logs. rocks, and whatever else. That is why they get cut up. It's more cosmetic than anything. They lose weight at a good rate during hunting season, just like an athlete who has laid up for several months then runs his tail off with a single all consuming purpose. Hounds love to hunt, sometimes more than the hunters themselves.
You did a good thing getting the dog safely off the highway. Hopefully his owner will find him. But don't think the dog was unhealthy, he's just a little battle worn. He'll get fat and pretty after hunting season.0 -
Don't forget that hounds love pickup trucks more than Labs do. If you came to my house and dropped the tailgate on your truck, my two hounds have just become your best friends[:D] 0 -
It is not unusual for a high spirited hound to cover 10 miles in one night. When hunted hard they do tend to look like crap-skinny and scared up. Owner is probably looking for him. I would post a notice in the surounding towns. 0 -
sounds a lot like 46270. just about every year at least one dog comes up in his yard, he has a kennel out back, he tries his best to keep the pound out of it, first if the dog is not picked up in time it will be put down, second if someone wants it, the animal has to be fixed before anyoje 0 -

That's how hunting hounds look, on a good day.0 -
If you can get word to the hunt clubs in the area, most likely if they don't own the hound they will know who does. Don't be surprised if you don't get a "Thank-You".
I'm glad to hear then North Carolina can't kill the dog. Somebody will claim him to get the transmitter.0 -
The Tri County Coon Hunter's clubhouse is down at the bottom of my mountain. I went down this morning and taped a note to the door detailing what I had done with this dog. They meet once a week, so when those guys get the word I imagine someone will find a home for the dog.
Does anyone know what kind of hound this is? He has big floppy ears, is mostly white, and has big black splotches all over.

The ad in the paper should be able to locate the owner, as houndsmen
are a pretty tight-knit group. Cooners do sometimes use tracking
collars, especially on one known to "go wide" at times. Most coon
hounds also have browish or redish patches though.

Does the pound or local vet have the equipment to check him for a micro-chip?
Since they came out with them, every dog I've had has been micro-chipped. It's practicaly painless, it's permanent and it's cheap insurance should your lose you dog.0 -
I will check with the pound today and see if they can check for a micro chip.
But, if the owner was too dumb to put a tag with phone number on the dog, probably too dumb to micro chip.0
