Knee pain ER visit Update!

I have has knee pain for quite some time now but yesterday, it slam dunked me. It would get severe, slack up, then severe again. Sort of like a toothache. About 2PM it got so bad I gave in and went to ER in Oxford MS, 35 miles away. Only had about a 2 hour wait. Had to get totally undressed, and put on the little robe. All they did then was take 2 xrays of the knee and I got dressed again. Talk about agony! The knee just did not want to bend.

The outcome was, I got 14 naproxen pain pills and instructions to see a doctor Monday. Cartilege(s) appeared to be getting thin in the knee. The pain pills do not work very well. Getting into and out of a car is extremely painful. Stairs are to be avoided at all costs.

This pain is not quite as bad as a kidney stone but it is getting close. I have no idea what the treatment of this is. Have any of you had this sort of ailment and what was your treatment? Any advice is welcome. Tom

UPDATE: Waiting on results from bloodwork but the ortho doctor believes it is gout! I thought gout was confined to the big toe but he says you can get it in any joint. I suppose I should hope that is what it is since it could be lots worse. I guess arthritis could be more cripling. I'll tell you all one thing tho, this stuff hurts like hell. My meds may not have kicked in yet but I am on my third dose now. He did give me a little stronger pill and I take it more often than the ER doc did. He also gave me Colchicine for gout.I hope relief is soon. Tom

    Sounds like possibly torn cartlidge.

    If so othroscopic surgery may very well be in your near future!

    Sounds familiar, in my case though it is sciattica.

    Muscle relaxer (flexoril or generic) will help some, anti-inflamitory (Ibuprofin) will help some, Vicoden will help more, time may fix it. Hope your situation is different.

    I agree with gitrdone, sounds like torn cartilage.
    If so, and you are lucky, you can get the arthroscope, outpatient surgery that doesn't even need stitches.

    While I was in the hospital for the past two weeks my right elbow started giving me fits. They kept shooting me with dilaudid (sp) and it helped for a little while. Finally they asked me if I normally take any over the counter meds. ALEVE. I take at least two every day. Dr. asked me if I had gout. I don't know. He prescribed Naprosyn and the pain is gone. Messes up my stomach though.

    had some torn cartlege in my knee a few year back had out pateint surget anda week and a half was back at work

    Tom, I had orthoscopic knee surgery about 7 years ago. It was an outpatient procedure and I haven't had any pain since. I've had friends have the same procedure done with a bad Doctor and they're still having problems. I would recommend DR Forapoulas in Corinth if you do happen to need surgery.

    Best of luck...I hope that is all it is...I know it can be painful, but some of the alternatives could be far worse!

    I have had this surgery 2x. The 1st time - I WISH I never would have done this. I had some "discomfort." But, be aware that this type of surgery has the doctor "smooth" out the cartlidge - which also means that thinning it out in some places. A year after I had the first one, I developed a sharp pain 1 day, and eventually had to have a 2nd surgery. Was still several months of theraphy and a cortesone shot before I could walk on it.

    Now, after years of favoring the good knee, I now have bad pain in that knee. I will not have knee surgery until I cannot walk on it at all. And, I'm only 35.

    I would suggest that you try the cortesone shot and any other option BEFORE you do the surgery. It should be the last option.

    Did the doc give you any dietary advice?
    Gout used to be known as the ailment of the British kings, it is caused by eating a high fat high meat diet. All the kings ever ate was roast pork and dark ale, no vegetables.
    If doc didn't discuss it with you, I suggest you google it up, you probably can do yourself a big favor by hitting the spinach salad instead of the pork chops.
