WASHINGTON - Democratic Sen. Barack Obama said Tuesday he is taking the initial step in a presidential bid that could make him the nation's first black to occupy the White House.
Obama announced on his Web site, www.barackobama.com, that he was filing a presidential exploratory committee. In a video on his exploratory committee web site, Obama said, "On February 10th, at the end of these discussions, in my home state of Illinois, I'll share my plans with my friends, neighbors and fellow Americans."
"I certainly didn't expect to find myself in this position a year ago," Obama said in a video posting. "I've been struck by how hungry we all are for a different kind of politics. So I've spent some time thinking about how I could best advance the cause of change and progress that we so desperately need."

That's nice. Hopefully he doesn't run for senate, because then he'd certainly lose both. Posterboy. No substance. Dems are stupid for using him now, he would be an excellent candidate in 8 years.

IMO, Mr. Obama wants to be THE FIRST African-American to run for the Office of the Presidency. Even though his overall chances of winning are slim, it indelibly writes his name into the history books while it dampens down Madame Hillary's possible run for the Oval Office. I see it as being a good thing right now, given the political climate in Washington D.C. 0 -

Charlene Mitchell was the first African-American to run for President, at the head of the 1968 Communist Party ticket. She received 1,075 votes from four states. She was also the first woman to have her name on the general election (i.e. November) ballot.0 -
If Obama and Rice get on their respective party tickets, even as VP, it would be a prime time for a viable 3rd party to make its way into politics to stay. Tom Tancredo would be just the one to head it up IMO. 0 -

Here's a note about the Communist loving Charlene Mitchell from Chicago who was, naturally, active in the NAACP and other Anti-American organizations.
Charlene Mitchell was born in Cincinnati, Ohio at the beginning of the depression toworking class parents. She grew up and attended school in Chicago, and startedprogressive movement activity during World War II, becoming politically active at age13. Charlene was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1958.
Now divorced, she is the mother of a son who is an automobile worker at Ford in St.Louis. Charlene was an activist in the Civil Rights Movement, from NAACP as a youth, to becoming an active supporter of SNCC and the Black Panther Party. Her anti-apartheid work led to her invitation to become an official observer to the first free South African Elections in 1994. Truthfully, it "sort of" doesn't count for much as the voting public sees only Dems and Reps with the occasional Indy as being actual or validated/sanctioned candidates BUT thanks for that information as I didn't even think back to then or to her. Good history lesson.0 -
Im affiliation is on the other side from him, but I think he would be good. He would be different and I think thats what we need, hes young and uncorrupted for now at least. 0 -

He was elected to the Senate in 2004, which means his Senate seat won't be up for re-election until 2010. He can run for President in '08 and still keep his Senate seat if he loses.0 -
I think people get to focused on individual views or topics. Somebody will not like somebody because they do or do not support abortion, to bad its not changing. Half of the time these guys have to pick a side in order to stay inline with their party. Topics do matter, but everybody wants to start talking about, OH well he supports this or doesnt support that. Start looking at the overall candidate and how he carries him self. I hate the left but honestly as much as you conspiraces come up with stuff on on they are taking away guns, its not going to happen. I think this guy maybe does have an edge but dont we all have our own querks and beleifs. Thats why this guy could be good for us 0 -

I'll buy that, Bloviator, and add that the republicans are too much like the dems in the corrupt-department to rebound, unless they ditch the illegal alien amnesty plan, and lip service on their border policy in favor of a policy with real teeth in it. This they will not do...too many secular-progressives in both parties. I'm just hoping we see the emergence a strong third party. 0 -

Jesse Jackson ran in 1984. My ambulance crew had to stand by at a speech he gave at Georgia College.
The guy gave a pretty good speech.
My partner and I were standing there at the door, in uniform, our ambulance parked right there. Those Secret Service guys never took their eye off of me. I couldn't quite figure that out, I guess I must look like an assassin.0
