Packaging Deer meat
Ok, I'm going to be (hopefully) shooting my deer this weekend and next Wednesday is going to be butchering day!
What's the best way to package the boned meat for the freezer? Would saran wrap and plastic freezer bags work? Let me know what has worked for you guys. Thanks!

Butchers paper. 0 -
best to use is a waxed back brown paper. my dad's been a butcher for over 40 years now and that is what they use. it'll keep for about 4-5 years if double wrapped. the paper absorbs most of the moisture while the wax backing acts to keep the moisture from freezing into the meat.
i have no idea where to get it though. sorry.0 -
Saran wrap and then freezer paper. Have used that forever and it works perfect![:)] 0 -
Do the above too....but if you have $100 laying around, this is the best thing you can do with it. I've had a FoodSaver for many years and they are the greatest. [:)][:)] I've packaged millions of deer and elk, fish, etc. WalMart carries them.

You can buy freezer paper in the grocery store. I have some steaks in the freezer now, they have been there eleven months and are perfect. I don't use saran wrap.
That vacuum sealer machine is the real deal, also works great.0 -

+1 on the FoodSaver! You can get them at WallyWorld and they now have their own brand of bags that are just as good as the originals, but cost a lot less too.
The benefit with the FoodSaver is that once it is vacuum sealed, it will not get freezer burnt. I pulled out a package of venison from 2005 a couple of weeks ago and it was as good as the day that I put it in the freezer.0 -
i put mine in freezer bags then butcher paper 0 -

Freezer paper and Freezer tape, IF you don't have a Vacuum packer. I've had the freezer paper wrapped meat last, without freezer burn, for over two years. Vacuum packed even longer. Trick of the trade: For long term storage use a non-frost free freezer. I rotate to the inside frost free freezer or fridge freezer only when the other is at capacity. 0 -
I got some freezer paper and ziplock freezer bags. $10 for the whole deal and I'll be set.
I about got a Reynolds vacuum sealer thing, but it just looked cheap. I'll have to invest in the Food Saver for next year. Thanks guys!!0 -
Did you "Freezer Tape"? 0 -
Use a big piece of that freezer paper, about two feet long. Put the meat in one corner, and roll it up diagonally. Squeeze it as you roll it up, and try to get all the air out. Air is what causes freezer burn.
I like freezer paper, but the reason vacuum pack works so well is that it takes all the air out.0
