Neck shots?????????
Can somebody convince me why this is a good choice for a target on larger big game?
To me, it seems a very poor choice for a quick, clean, humane kill. Small area if you're hoping to hit the spine, and or a jugular vein. Just not very wise in my opinion.

I'm not sure which game you mean exactly, but I have used this technique on deer many times with great success.
Aim for the center of the neck and squeeze. Bang, deer falls down right where it was standing! No tracking or trailing involved.....just go get the truck and the knives

I have to agree too, as I've been placing my shots there (on deer) when I can for some time now. They have always dropped instantly, no tracking. You don't actually have to hit the spine, put it close and the shock will drop them. They've always died pretty quick from these shots too. No more inhumane than them running 100yds through the woods before bleeding out or sufocating, IMO.

Well, if you do that I would think you'd mess up the mount. Might as well treat it like any other doe and pop it in the head[;)]

IMHO, it's all about shot placement and hunter's ability. The shoulder/chest area presents the (best and largest target ~ 18" for deer) concentration of the vitals. The neck shot is a much smaller area and lower percentage shot. Although, I have successfully taken head and neck shots, I always go for the higher percentage shots ... regardless what shot is presented, if I do not feel comfortable, I don't take the shot. Again, it's all about shot placement and hunter's ability.

neck shot for me. Trophies mean nothing to me and I never shoot large (old) deer. I process my own so I like 'em small. I'm the only one at the house that eats 'em too. (such a shame I'm surrounded by city folks [:o)]) 0 -

The lung shot, as stated above, provided a much larger target. At long ranges, say over 80 yards, I always take the lung shot. I have shot over 50 deer in the lungs and recovered every one. They will run 60 to 100 yards after being hit.
If the sun is going down, and the deer is close and standing still, I will take a shot for the spine. I have taken two shots for the middle of the neck, they dropped like a rock.
However, what I prefer is the "high shoulder shot." This is right in the middle of the shoulder, about 5 inches down from the top of the back.
The spine is wider here than in the neck so you have a bigger target.
If you hit low with a high shoulder shot, the first thing you will hit is both lungs, so you still have a fatal shot.
I have taken the high shoulder shot a dozen times, dropped them like they were poleaxed. You waste a couple pounds of shoulder meat, all it is good for is hamburger anyway.0 -
After years of the conventional 'heart/lung' shots...I got tired of trailing 'dead on their feet but ran 100 yards' deer.
Seems to me, that deer is in agony for that period of time. Add to that, the almost always need for a .22 to the head, anyway..after you find them.
After going to the neck shot...the last 25 deer or so...I rarely had one step out of its tracks..DRT.
No trailing, no finishing shots, no worries.
One proviso.
Be sure you are a decent to above aveage shot. When you are cool enough to call your shots, and can control your nerves..go to the neck shot. I have made that shot out to 300 yards..and never lost a deer doing it.
Average shot ? Practice...and continue with the heart/lung shot.0 -

Good question, great answers. You can't beat a neck shot if the range is right. Possibly not so good for trophy hunters, but I'm not one of those. 0 -
I have made 5 neck shots( with my rifle) on deer and have never had a single one take a step after the shot.
My dad( who has been hunting a heck of a lot longer than me) has made 13 neck shots(with his rifle) and has had the same results as me on every single one.
In my opinion neck shots are fine with a rifle, But i should note that i am a experienced archery hunter and for all of you bow guys out there, NEVER EVER TAKE A NECK SHOT ON A DEER WITH YOUR BOW, PERIOD!!!0 -

i must agree with you . i used to hunt with a couple of guys that were rack huntters and that P.M.O.they could care less about the meat. they would shoot the deer any place or as many times as it took to kill it0 -
i shoot them at the base of the ear, between the ears or between the eyes. no mess and it drops them right there[;)][:D] 0 -
For the average hunter, this may be a poor shot choice, but with experience and ability, the shot can be an excellant choice, Like others have said, they will drop! I still perfer the profile shot, behind the front shoulder.
I even did head shots and drop them, but I only did this because they were standing in thick brush covering the body.

If you don't damage the neck too badly, it makes a great roast.
I know a lot of people throw them away, as I have done, on occasion.
Sprinkle a package of powdered Lipton onion soup mix on the neck. Put six strips of bacon on the neck.
Wrap in aluminum foil, bake at 225 for six hours. You won't believe how great it tastes. There is a lot of meat on the neck! Makes great sandwiches as leftovers.
Plus, makes the house smell great all day while cooking.0
