9mm is the DEADLIEST
According to Mythbusters on the Discovery channel..If you're being shot at, just jump into water and your safe!
Results:
The 9mm and 12 gauge slug were lethal at 9 feet deep.
The 30.06 .223 and 50BMG only penetrated 9-12 inches of water

I have watched that episode a coupl times and I do believe thier conclutions were flawed!(flawed may be the wrong word for me to use)
There would be many more variables to consider than just caliber and such.
Shot angles would be the biggest factor as a person shooting will never hit the same exact angle with every shot and as little as 1 degree of shot angle change could make a very big difference in penatration in water!
Powder loads and bullet structure would also make very big differences (IE: a Remmington factory load may not do as well as a home load)!
I could keep going on different thing that may effect this type of thing but I am sure that many of you know more about this stuff than I do so there would be no need for me to keep going.[;)]0 -

I watched the show. I have worked on /made spear guns for years. I knew that the big and slow would go further underwater because of my testing for spear guns. I was not surprised at the results at all.
The fifty was just a waste of time, but they go off on tangents for the bigger boom thing every chance they get.
I would expect the .45 cal round to do as well or better underwater.
But about 9 feet is max for any round underwater. On my rubber band (5/8" thick special recipe tube) 15' is max distance to get a spear shaft through a grouper of about 150 lbs.0 -

I'm no scientist, just love to the watch the Mythbusters series.
Seems rounds traveling over 2000fps explode and expell all their energy when entering water.
In another episode, they fired guns underwater. The 9mm penetrated 6 inches of gel at 6 feet underwater!
The 12 gauge blew the barrel out.0 -
I find it very hard to believe that a 9mm would be lethal at 9 feet underwater.
Just to be safe, next time Israeli agents are shooting at me with Uzis while I have my skin diving gear on, I will be sure to get ten feet deep.0
