americas favorite muzzle loader gun
hi, i have hunted for 40 years and have a lot of guns but i don't have a muzzle loader gun for the new season. i know there are a lot of good brands out there and am looking for a good quality modern brand gun(scoped) that will shoot accurately out to 200 yds. if not more, if the chance arises. any top of the line recommendations other than what a salesman in the local store is trying to sell? preferred brand? brand that appreciates in value more than the rest? thanks - allen

I use a Thompson/Center Hawken .50, but I don't think that's what you're looking for. I've never owned one but have heard good things about the Thompson/Center In-Lines using .50/.44 sabots.

Pennsylvania long rifle - my grandfather and his best friend, Paul Comer, used to build them back in 1910. Wish I had an example of one. They even used to hunt down the 200 year old walnut from long abandoned mill sites to make them as 'original' as possible. 0 -
Thompson Encore...high twist rate for sabot for long range, 150 grain capable, very accurate, QLA and speed breech of the Pro Hunter barrel are very helpful.

The Savage 10ML II is the best thing in the in-line world right now. You can still load BP or it's substitutes, BUT best of all you can use smokeless powder. We get some 2500+ fps from only 44gr's of N110 and smokeless powder is NON-CORROSIVE which eliminates that whole cleaning thing.
Also,..they are fully 200yd capable with minimal drop and I would say can get it done at 300yds if you know your trajectory. I am 2 1/2" high at 100yds and maybe 2-3" low at 200yds. Hows that for a "point blank" muzzleloader.[;)]0 -
I would suggest that you get a muzzleloader with a stainless barrel, inline ignition, fast rate of twist for stability when shooting sabots, drilled and tapped for scope. I think most modern muzzloaders will decrease in value rather than appreicate, so I wouldn't be looking to buy and investment, just a hunting tool. Knight, Thompson, and Savage seem to me to be the best on the market. 0 -
You asked for America's favorite muzzleloader. Without looking up any statistics, I am going to say it is the Thompson Center Omega.
It will do everything you ask for, take a scope, and kill out to 200 yards. Great rifle.
MY favorite is the Savage. It shoots smokeless powder, so you don't have to clean it after shooting a deer, Praise God.
Also gets more power than the other inlines.
Shoot a deer in the chest with a Hornady 250 SST from a Savage, it hits like the Hammer of Thor. Kills 'em lots better than the 30-06, and I have killed over 50 deer with the 30-06.0 -
I have a T/C Omega 50, and it is a great shooter! But in camo and SS, it just doesn't look like a gun. So now I have an Italian-made Hawken. Now that is a BP long gun ... I'm thinking that it could be the "Winchester Model 94" of the muzzle loader world! 0 -
America's favorite? No such beast, but several entrants, Knight Rifles, Savage, Ruger, Thompson Center and others, Austin Halleck would also be a nice choice. 0 -

Yep, but there might be one of their nice rifles out there looking for a home. I like Hatfield's too, and they have been gone even longer.

Well, that is true. AH did build some beautiful rifles. They had the prettiest wood ever put on an inline. I almost bought one, but decided to go smokeless, instead.
