Son broke his arm.
elk jr. took a tumble last night at judo and broke the end of one of the bones in his elbow. He wasn't "doing" judo at the time. He stepped backwards off a step he didnt see and put his arm out to try and catch himself. He was very good in the ER last night but is understandably grumpy today. They put him in a splint (looks like a 1/2 cast to me). We see a specialist on Tuesday of next week for the final word.

Too bad.
I hope he heals quickly.
I remember a compound fracture of both bones in my left forearm. I had two elbows.
8 weeks in a cast during baseball season sucked!0 -
I'm very sorry to hear that. Elbow fractures can be tricky. My wishes for a speedy recovery.
When I was about 6 I fell while roller skating and stuck my arm straight out breaking my wrist. That the first of 23 broken bones I have had in my life.0 -
Oh, No
tell the little guy to hang in there, hope it is not more serious than it looks.0 -
He will be fine,......but inform him about "arthritis", so he will know what is killing him when he gets around 40 years old![:D] 0 -

Mine set in at 30.
Mine too as far as the knees are concerned. Duck walking around the MCRD grinder at San Diego during foggy mornings which were the order of winter days back then, and up hills at Camp Matthews with an M1 over your head, in cadence, with groans of certifiable agony will cause that.
Good luck to your son on a fast recovery.0 -

At least yours came in the service of the country. Mine is from throwing too many curve balls.[V]0 -
Hey, elkoholic, being a pitcher is high on most anyone's list of praise. Thanks, though. 0 -
sad.
sorry to hear your boy will have 7 to 10% of his motion range lost.
i know. i broke mine...stacking winter wood.
the good side is, man can i lift with that arm now. it never goes straight and always has that angle to put a muscle into it! boy can i lift heavy things......2 years later.[8D][:D]0 -
Prayer sent. Tell the kid to hang in there. 0 -
How long has your son been taking Judo lessons? Does he like it?
I saw the "Human Weapon" show on Judo and I am intrigued by it.0 -

We started it together about 8 months ago. He is only 4 y/o (5 this weekend) so his attention span is short but he does well. He picks up something new each week.0 -
get well soon 0 -
I did that when I was a kid and it hurt like heck. My prayers that his doesn't and heals quickly. 0 -
Sorry to hear this news.
Best wishes sent to elk jr.0 -
Well, elkoholic, how do you like Judo?
I really could have used that stuff in high school. I used to get into fights where a big guy would rush me and knock me down.
They showed on Human Weapon where if a Judo guy gets rushed, he just grabs the opponenet's collar, and he rolls onto his back. At the same time, he puts one foot into the opponents lower stomach. Doing this flips the opponent over onto his back.
It uses the aggressor's energy to flip him.
The bigger the attacker is, and the harder he charges, the farther he gets flipped.
I had a buddy in college who got into a fight with a Judo guy once. He told me, the Judo guy flipped him onto the asphalt parking lot three times, and he just gave up. He said it was weird, getting your ass beat by a guy who never kicks or punches you. He said it was like you beat yourself up.0 -
I hope the recovery goes well. and don't let him over-do-it when he feels 90% healed. 0 -
Why is a five year old doing Judo? You couldn't wait until he was ten?

I really like it. I've trained striking sports for most of my life but found that anybody with average grappling skills was tuff to deal with. I haven't been at it very long but I already prefer to grapple then strike. I feel like grappling controls the situation better. I'm also suprised how easy it is on the body except on nights when we do some full speed throws.
I also really like it for my son. All the positives of a martial art without the punching and kicking that can get him in trouble.0 -
I'll see your Judo and raise you one Louisville Slugger.
