  Impressive? Yes, very much so. Necessary? Highly doubtful. Practical? Again, doubtful.
  
  Real-life passenger transportation has so many variables that make travelling at excessive speeds exponentially dangerous.
  
  But, for purposes of setting a record, it was truly a terrific engineering achievement. Kudos to the French for that one.
