FOR THE YOUNGER PEOPLE WHO SAVE
Just in case you don't know it when you buy a CD your interest DON'T collect interest. Say you buy a $10.000.00 CD. You will probably get about 5.5% but the interest will just lay there until the CD matures. Have your bank transfer all interest into say a money market account where you will get interest on your interest!! Probably about 2.5%. Better than nothing.

+1
and don't panic and sell if the stocks fluctuate, a good company's stock should pull through and grow in the long run0 -
Buy gold. Anything based on paper money (fake money) is tanking. The devaluation of the dollar will outpace the 2.5% and even if you have more dollars you have less buying power. 0 -
So, if you need groceries -- can you go to Super Walmart and pay for them in gold? If they did accept gold, you'd get change back in dollars and cents wouldn't you?
Send me all your fake paper money that's tanking -- I'll figure out a way to spend it.
Besides, what would you pay for your gold with if not fake tanking paper money?0 -
If you have gold i'll buy it from you for paper. The paper will continue tanking, and the gold will hold its value, since it's a real thing of value. At a later point in time, i'll sell it back to you for twice as much and go buy my groceries. 0 -
Rosie, what do you think your doing? trying to tell the young people something. shame on you. 0 -
Buying gold is ridiculous if things crash. WHO WOULD NEED GOLD IF THE SHTF?????????
Buy *ammo*!!!!!!!!!!!
Gold is no more valuable than lead in a time of emergency. Who needs it? Would someone have a "jewelry emergency" or something?
Ammo and guns are going to be the REAL currency. With them, you can get ANYTHING you need! [}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)]

Yep on what Merc said 0 -
Learn to reload, buy 9mm and .38 and .45 dies, pick up lotsa brass at the local range, stockpile primers, then if SHTF, you will be protected by anyone near you who has a gun, and paid well! For extra profit, learn to cast bullets from wheelweights, battery lead, etc.
Heck, just "invest " in ammo - I have twenty boxes of commercial .44 ammo with labels that say $13.95 on them!! Same with shotshells.
For real, though, invest in a good diversified mutual fund. I retired with X units in 2003 - even though I have been living solely off it, and there have been some big slides down, the fund has grown to over 1.3X units today.0 -
Merc,
Gold's good if you intend to stay within the law. All the macho talk of needing only ammo aside, how many folks here are really gonna plug someone over a roll of toilet paper or some bottled water? I'd reckon no one.0 -
If lead keeps going up, it will be like gold! 0 -

If it gets to a point where people are burning paper money for warmth because it's cheaper than firewood (yes i'm exaggerating to make a point), what do you think people will use for money? The same thing people have used for thousands of years. Gold. Paper money originally was just a receipt for an amount of gold you had in the bank, until they got rid of the gold standard. Gold is and always has been real money. Federal Reserve notes are fake money. They are worthless paper.
Don't believe me if you don't want to
/shrug
(edit) I'll cut you off at the pass and anticipate your next question. "If paper money is fake and worthless, then why do they give me groceries for it?" Because it is based on the credit and good faith of our federal government. Their credit is going bad, and the paper money is going with it. Gold is a real thing, available in limited supply, and can't be endlessly printed out of thin air on a printing press at the Federal Reserve.
I should just keep my mouth shut and let you guys keep your paper, and the gold will be easier for me to get lol.(end edit)0 -
What Merc said. 0 -
I agree on the ammo part of Merc's assertion. (edit)You'll need it to defend your big pile of gold [:D] When you guys realize i am right i am gonna need lots of it to fend you off [:p](end edit) 0 -
if our government falls to the point cash is worthless, it looks like i will be taking what i need by force anyway, the weight of gold will just slow me down with the ammo i would have to carry 0 -
Have the interest compounded back monthly to the CD. This is the way I always do it. I learned that from my years of working in the banking business. 0 -

Gold...Bwaaahahahaha....looks like brass and lead are better performers currently!!!0 -
CD= certifacate of deposit=savings account = no gain............... 0 -
May be low Runner but at least it don't lose anything. Also when a person gets to a certain age (like me) you can't afford to take chances. And to all you SHF wannabes I invite you to throw as much lead, ammo, food and family on your back that you can carry and head into the wilderness for one day. Prentend the lead is gold. Hell just try to carry 500 rounds of CF ammo one day. 0 -
Dennis,
Uhhhhh.......do you get sarcasm where you live? I do understand some communities can't afford it.
