BEST bank phone fraud I've ever heard!
Yesterday, my wife's classroom aide, a Navy wife, got a call from Wells Fargo Bank.
The guy on the other end of the phone asked her husband - retired Navy Master Chief (Ret.) - for their Acct. # AND Social Security # - Joe is pretty sharp - knows the only form of telephonic ID Wells Fargo ever asks for is 'mother's maiden name' and the last four digits of your Social Security number.
The guy had ID'd himself as 'Sam' - Master Chief (Ret.) Joe refused to give up his Acct. # and Social Security #! `Sam' said, "If you feel uncomfortable giving them to me over your phone ... just hang up and call the branch phone number."
Joe said, "OK" and did.
HERE'S WHERE I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE GIVEN AWAY THE STORE!
Master Chief (Ret.) Joe, got the number OUT OF THE PHONE BOOK and called the bank.
'Sam' answered, and identified himself as a bank employee - was delighted to talk to Master Chief (Ret.) Joe, again!
'Sam' asked, again, for his Acct. # AND Social Security #!
Master Chief (Ret.) Joe still smelled a rat and hung up. He drove over to the bank - inquired IF the bank had an employee named `Sam' - he was told they did and Joe was asked into a private office, asked some questions by an FBI agent there. There were a few other FBI agents asking a few others questions, too.
Apparently, they - the bad guys - had somehow tapped into the banks phone system and were diverting 'the right' calls to the back to their own set-up - where ever that is.
UNBELIEVABLE!
BEWARE - IT'S THE VERY BEST (ALMOST AIRTIGHT) BANK SCAM I'VE EVER HEARD OF!
.... and by the way ... it's one of OUR banks, too!
Thought you'd be interested - go ahead and spread the word!

That is a great scam. Gotta hand it to those criminals.
Hope the FBI send them to Leavenworth.0 -
Thats pretty bad. It reminds me of another scam that seems to have cropped up, where a person calls you, posing as a customer service rep from Paypal, and asks to "verify" your account info. Well, you can guess what happens once they get that info.
Just goes to show, the telephone is no more secure than email. Do not give out any personal info unless you're the one who initiated the call (like to turn on utilities or what not).0 -
It isn't hard to do at all, if you have access to their phones/phone lines. Almost every building has the phone box right outside the building, and is UNLOCKED!
Just hook up your own portable phone to those wires, and forward all the calls to whatever number you want. There is a way to forward calls by pressing certain numbers.
