More flower pics (image intensive)
Those of you who think these are gay.....just remember, you OPENED this thread. Now move along!
Fairy Slipper (Calypso bulbosa). This image is a couple years old, but I did see a great many of these today.
Shooting star (Dodecatheon sp.). I've heard that this entire genus has been revised into Primula, which annoys me, but that's the way it goes. The flower is still pretty.
Chocolate fritillary (Fritillaria lanceolata). This is an easy flower to miss because its colors are so camouflaged. I doubt that this species is rare but I know it only from a single site, and at that site it is extraordinarily abundant. You can hardly take a step without crushing two of them.
Arty chocolate fritillary (Fritillaria lanceolata). I'll confess to digitally removing a twig from the lower right-hand corner of this image. Otherwise the image is un-doctored. I had to over-expose the hell out of the sky to get the internal parts of the flower to show. I like this picture.

Merc....it appears that you cultivate cacti? Where I've lived, there have been exactly four species of cacti that were viable in the wild: Opuntia polyacantha, Opuntia fragilis, and two rare ball cacti whose names I forget. One of my goals for this spring is to photograph the O. polyacantha on the Snake River, near here.
So: where are you, and do you cultivate them?0 -

I consider flowers to be just some of the 'window dressings' of life. Colors, patterns and texture make life interesting for the eyes.

Hey Merc, got any Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus? Been growing it for over 25 years and have not gotten a bloom yet. You could leave it out all year where you are and maybe get me a photo of a bloom. Got starts if you want them. 0 -

Nope, never a bloom on any of my Tephros. I also have T. molinensis and T. weberi. I have both the white and brown spined version of the T. articulatus. Thanks for the offer, but I'm good on the starts.

Yes, I grow a lot of cacti. I live in Tucson, so it is fairly easy here. I just put up a 20' x 72' shade house, and it is nearly full already. Lots of fun!
