    I have a gas powered helicopter downstairs... Never had guts enough to start it (its brand new..) because of the exact fact that it could harm someone

    I had a medium electric heilo. After 4 attempted flights, I ended up putting as much money into repairs as I did when I bought it. I sold it on ebay.

    My Step-Dad is big into RC planes and choppers. Some of his planes have 6 foot wingspans. the trick to learn choppers is: get two long lenghts of dowl rod and attach them to the chopper skids in a big X pattern. They act as training wheels for landings until you get the technique down.

    I did that, but it hit the ends of the dowels and bounced over onto its rotor. Parts went flying everywhere.

    This is the one to get,it's called Reflex now.$60-80 I got one 2 weeks ago and it's still going after alot of crashs.I've never picked up anything RC before this.Got one for dad while he recuperates from knee replacement.

    I think they are really cool, but have seen guys spend hundreds building and repairing them without much actually flying, so I am content to just think they are really cool without wanting to buy one.

    A easy cheap semi trainer is the E-Flite CX, co-axial (twin mainrotor).

    Go for about $180-$200 complete with batteries & radios.

    Had one now for over 6 months, crashed at least a dozen times.
    Rotor blades come is sets of 4 are $7.99
    Total investment in heli & part is about $250 for 6 months.

    It can be flown indoors is best, living room works great.

    It cant handle outside winds in excess of 8mph, yep I learnt the hard way.
    Crashed from 10 foot up, did not break a thing.

    Helis are as bad a firearms, cant have just one.
    Up to 3 now.

    RC helos. Back in '89 a buddy decided to get into them. He fired it up and it promptly chewed his shins some kind of bad, didn't do the helo much good either. He fixed it and ended up mastering that thing, was very impressive to see what he could do with it. Couple of times it got away from him (out of radio range).

    I'm afraid of the price! I had a gas powered car once. I spent $100.00 on it one saturday, took it home, started it up and flipped it within 2 minutes another $15.00. I just gave it away after that. I figured with all my costs and how many times i drove it it cost me around $2.00 a minute to drive. Sca-rew that!

    i had one when i was 15. rc Airwolf...from the tv show. gas powered, glow plug ignition, hit a high altitude of around 80 ft. got taken by the wind into the river....never did find the tail boom.

    BUSHMASTER E-Flite CX Blade has a Cobra gunship body for around $25-$30.
    The heli has a 13" rotorspan & is perfect for livingroom flying.
    Repair parts are cheap
    Around $180 or $200 for it.

    Not really in the same category price-wise, but the AirHogs RC chopper is a blast in my living room! Not much control 'til the trim is set, but after that; watch out kitty!
    It almost has enough stability to fire bottle rockets!
    Whole kit 'n kaboodle was $35 at WallyWorld.

    Put a thumb tack on the nose of the AirHog!
