can you hunt with a suppressor?
squirls in particular? just wondering I got my suppressor was telling a friend at work how I would like to put ot on my 10/22 ang go squirl hunting, he told me that would be a no no.I didnt know if it was or not so is it? I live in ky if that matters thanks

I would call your state natural resource people. I found NO regulations in SC that says it is illegal. The gun is not totally silenced if you use regular .22's above 1100 F.P.S. Subsonic ammo will do the job and will tame the gun to basically just the action being heard of opening and closing. Ballistically you lose some energy of the .22 to kill the game. Only drawback is the extra length of the barrel going thru the woods. Carry your paperwork or have it on the premise you are hunting in case MR. Gamewarden happens to come around. For those who post that it isn't Please verify your source.

I coundn't find anything in the GA laws that said it was not legal to hunt using a suppressor. I agree with select-fire though and would call your local game warden just to check. However, if he/she says it is not legal, make sure they state the actual law, not just what they think. 0 -

this brings up a really interesting question, i was thinking of getting one for my lone eagle .243 to hunt groundhogs with, in areas that are building closer to farmland, it's legal to hunt the groundhogs, i was just going to go the extra step and be quiet about it. my lone eagle with muzzle brake isnt quiet at all. since this is a non game animal with a continuous open season is it legal to use a silencer? I'm in virginia by the way... 0 -
I looked at Virginia's Game and Fish page, and didn't see anything that says you can't use a suppressor.
The criminal code states:
18.2-308.6. Possession of unregistered firearm mufflers or silencers prohibited; penalty.
It shall be unlawful for any person to possess any firearm muffler or firearm silencer which is not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. A violation of this section shall be punishable as a Class 6 felony.
So I would imagine that as long as it was a legal suppressor, it would be legal to hunt with.0 -
In Washinton state there only one law listed about hunting with NFA firearms. It says it is illegal to hunt with a Full Auto. Other then that no listed laws about NFA firearms and hunting. It is illegal to shoot a suppressor at all, but that is not enforced much since there is no exemption for LEO to shoot theirs either.
There is no Federal Law aginst it that I am aware of. You need to check you local regulations.

I posed this question to a senior wildlife biologist for Oregon Fish & Wildlife. There is nothing in the hunting regulations that says you cannot hunt with a suppressor in Oregon.
I suggest you contact a wildlife biologist in your state.0 -

I live in WA and like Nwcid said you can legally own a suppressor but cannot use it. Idaho allows the use of a sound suppressor for hunting. 0 -
Interesting, I was told by the local FFL that they were illegal for hunting everywhere. I will have to tell him that is not the case.

Depends entirely on your local and state laws
I have killed many deer here inside city limits or in or near National Forest or Wildlife Management Areas that landowners wanted gone.
Wild pigs are the other major pests around here. Archery, 300 Whisper or a subsonic 22LR are the best choices I have found. The 300 Whisper with a slightly modified Sierra 220 gr MK is an absolutely amazing bullet!
It is interesting that local G&FC wildlife officers will ask a certain private citizen to take care of a duty that may? be illegal inside city limits. A local NFA persona dispatched 34 deer in one night inside one of Little Rock's most affluent areas. I can move 1321 feet West of my property line and be in another state which makes me be illegal as all GetOut. But the Ossifers and property owners still want the critters gone. They know who has the equipment to do it quietly. At night. In the dark. No waking anybody. The Critters don't have to be trailed. The meat is in a homeless shelter by Noon 12 hrs later. It made the shooter as nervous as a Baptist preacher in a New Orleans fatladyhouse and she will never do it again without a written contract.
Gunbroker's computer censors changed this a bit but most of you can figure it out.
Either know your local and state laws or be firing under a written contract to a Govt Agency.
To end this long thread for me,
I can shoot any creature with a suppressor as long as it is in a legal hunting season.
