    what exactly are you not happy with? that it's not FreeBSD? Read the link you posted, or developer.apple.com... (http://developer.apple.com/macosx/architecture/index.html, specifically: http://developer.apple.com/opensource/)

    They used a good chunk of FreeBSD but it's not "nothing more than FreeBSD with a applefied shell" as you would conclude from reading up on the OS architecture, though it's a very common misconception and everyone for some reason omits the mention of Mach 3.0 microkernel.

    FreeBSD is just that, FREE. You can alter the source and claim it as your own, which is what apple has done. Dont take it so personal, Micro$oft done it as well, their tcp/ip stacks are stolen (i mean borrowed) from BSD also.

    Now you're going completely into a different direction... Anyways, I got it - you're on OpenBSD, which is great. The more *BSD is out there the merrier, don't forget to contribute. :)

    BSD is just a small part of the Mach microkernel that encompasses file systems, networking, NKE and POSIX. (still doesn't handle I/O or drivers) there's no way you can call OSX an apple-fied version of BSD.

    anyways it's not too terribly different from Windows in architecture, as they both go from hardware to core (with the kernel) to API to GUI. the difference is like fords and chevys, they both have engines transmissions doors and tires. big deal.
