I need a new motor!!!!!!!!!!
Its official my truck motor is SOL. Turns out it is really screwed up because the dealer did not put it in time right when they replaced the one head and fixed the gasket on the other side. Ill have the full details tomorrow, but i do know as of right now the timming must of been off in advance allowing the piston to strike the valve and it's all down hill from there.

need more info- What kind of truck, what motor etc. It is pretty hard for a piston to hit the valve unless the camshaft timing chain jumped or was set up incorrectly and even if he had the dist in wrong it still would not kiss the piston as the valve/piston timing is set with the timing chain. With head replacement cam timing are not touched. If it was running the timing could not have been off enough for the valve to hit the piston unless the mechanic cranked down the rocker all the way and then only with solid lifters would it be possible to kiss a piston. Maybe you burnt a piston from incorrect timing is that what you mean? 0 -

I agree with John, I think something else is going on also. seems like if it was that badly advance it wouldn't have been able to idle. Could the a piston have come loose from the wrist and hit the head?0 -
At first blush, it sounds like the dealer owes you a replacement motor. Is there a licensing requirement for mechanics in your state? If so, the state licensing dept / inspection dept should be the second places you contact (first being the dealer that did the original repair).
DON'T let anyone do ANY work on this engine, until after you have gone to the state.0 -

I know the feeling. I'm waiting for my 4x4 Suburban to get back from the shop with the GM tranny my mechanic ordered and is going to install. Hey, 180,000 miles. i really can't complain too much.0 -
When turning a motor over the valves can be struck if the timing is off, it does have to be running or idleing for this to happen. 0 -
valve and camshaft timing IS affected with the removal of the head on overhead cam engines 0 -
If it's an overhead cam truck then it's a.......rice burner. 0 -
or idiot mech held it to floor and floated the valves and piston smacked a valve.......have seen that happen. 0 -

Ford have had overhead cams in their full size trucks since 1997.0 -
It is a 1999 F-150 with the 5.4L overhead cam. What happened was the timing gear was not properly installed on the crankshaft and the key way was all screwed up and the gear is toast and was just spinning on the crank and thats that. Lots of things they said they did during the spark plug repair did not get done [:(!][:(!][:(!] 0 -
Sounds like the dealer should be the unhappy one here.
I would hold them accountable.
If they give you trouble start with the state Att. Gen.
Then a Lawyer if you have to.
Just my .02 YMMV

Sounds like its time for a new pickup.[:D] 0 -

Tell them you want a new motor, and you're not going to pay for parts or labor. They screwed up, not you. You trusted them to do the job right and they didn't. They should have shop insurance to cover errors unless they were too cheap to buy it.
If they try to get out of fixing it on their dime: Call Ford Motor Company and complain. The number is in your warranty book. This will also keep them from filing a bogus warranty claim with Ford and getting it covered under warranty. Call the BBB and file a complaint. Call your local TV station and if they have an Action News department, tell them what happened.0 -
yeah ford has had overhead single and dual for a while I jumped timing in my explorer with 37000 miles and they wouldnt help me out 97 for explorer beware. I had always been a chevy man. I put 200k on on gmc sierra and I have 150k in my current silverado. Not saying Ford is bad but after my fiasco I will never go back. 0 -
Ok it can and will happen with that motor but it is THEIR FAULT. they should replace the engine or repair the damage and suck most if not all of the cost up. STAND TALL and do not let them get away with it! 0 -
I even called Michigan when It happened to me. They told me there was nothing they could do besides search for a recall on the motor which there was not one. The Stealership tore my motor down. I saw it it was in a million pieces, They had to get motor blueprints from detroit also. After careful consideration they told me they would not redo the aluminum heads because they couldnt gaurantee them. They said they could get me a brand new motor of the engine assembly line and "They would help me out by giving me a 15% discount" still costing me close to 5k. I said screw you all. Man I was so so so mad. I went to the local junkyard and Got a used motor with supposedly 60k miles on it put it in the explorer and while it cost me a painful 2k to go this route it was alot better than 5k. Beware Of any dealership. I could tell you another crazy story from the chevy dealership but I have typed enough. 0 -
Tell the dealer you will go to the state Attorney General. If he does not want to help, this would be an ideal case for small claims court. If the claim is less than $5K you can file it in small claims court, no lawyer needed. 0 -
The last thing Ford needs now is any bad press. 0 -
Why am I not surprised. Made the mistake of buying a Furd once. Poor warranty service and crappy parts. It's no wonder they are on a downhill slide. 0 -
If it is an overhead cam engine one bank could have been in time and the other not. This would allow the engine to start with enough force to bend valves in the other bank and/or cave in up to four pistons in the other bank. The resulting load on the timing gears could have failed the key in the drive gear putting the first bank out of time and ruining that side too.
Get it all in writing. Don't do anything verbally because you're talkin new engine plus installation $$$.
Don't allow them to do a patch up repair.0 -
As a owner of a 2007 F150Crew w/5.4l engine.
Ford has increased the warranty coverage to 5yrs/50,000 miles on the 5.4l engine. Humm...
The engine has electronic varable valve timing, 3 valve alumium head, and "COP" coil on plug ignition.
Fords loss ratio on the 5.4L alumium head repairs is in the 35-40% within the first 100,000miles.
Does that say anything?
Thats why Ford extended the powertrain warranty to 5/50 in 2005.0 -
Thing with the aluminum head is everyone has that problem. Doesnt matter what make or model the other guys have kept theirs under wraps lots better. 0 -
Based on the others' stories I would dig around and see if there is some sort of class action law suit out there, you might get your engine fixed a little easier. 0 -

I call BS on that0 -
Ford has issued multi TSB's on the 5.4L head, seems there are only 4 threads holding in the sparkplugs up until 2004, lots of problems with blown out & stripped spark plug holes.
Problems still exist with the VVT variable valve timing, cam followers, lifters, blowing out sparkplugs and cracking, seem to be the most problems.
And why would Ford increase the warranty from 3/36 on the engine to 5/50??
Its sure not to increase the sales profit.
It was done to keep the owners off their backs with complaints, and to eliminate futher loses from lawsuits.
Check it out on the number of 5.4l comments on the Ford pickup forums.

Then you can decide for yourself.
My statement of the loss ratio on the 5.4L engine problems comes from Mercury Insurance, Mechanical Breakdown Division (Extended Warranty).
As they closed the 2006 year, the vehicles with the 5.4l engine exceed 40% of the total losses, paid by the warranty company for the entire vehicle.
Since the inception of the modular engine design being released by Ford.
