Full auto - a waste of time?

For those of you who have an opinion on the matter, how do you feel about full auto weapons?

Obviously as a collector they're highly desirable - anything that's worth 10 G's and isn't likely to decrease in value is a sound investment, after all.

But as a shooter, how do you feel about them? Do you feel them to be a waste of ammo and more maintenance trouble than they're worth or would you go full auto all the time if you could afford to?

To me, full auto is fun. There's just something about the kick to a machine gun and even if it burns more ammo in a minute than I usually shoot in a month, there's a certain sense of accomplishment in keeping steady and not turning it into an antiaircraft gun. And if machine guns weren't so heavily regulated (thank you FDR) and so damned expensive (thank you Reagan), I'd likely have one or two.

    I suppose it is fun and why shouldnt you be able to have one. As for me semi is good enough and most times single shot breaks are just as fun. I have no use for one because you can't hunt with one its not for me but I would certainly try out someone elses for the fun of it.

    I've got a couple, and they are a lot of fun. They are wasteful if you just squeeze off mag after mag, but once you get a little trigger time in you can start landing 2-3 round bursts into targets consistently. Not nearly as wasteful then.

    As far as "cool" factor, they are tough to beat.

    Never have felt that full-auto was for me, even though it's a helluva lot of fun.

    I prefer aimed fire (with a long gun).

    First and foremost, I don't beleive they should have the restrictions they have and sure as hell shouldn't be expensive as they are.

    As far as me having them. I can see the fun factor as a novelty, but would probally never own one myself. They just aren't my thing, I find them to be wastefull and would rather practice shot placement.

    I've had mine for quite a few years, and although I'd likely lose a few $$ in the process, I wouldn't be nearly as punished as those that got them this millenium. I'd gladly take the loss if it meant lifting the oppressive restrictions, and re-open the flow of full-autos.

    My cup of tea. Have shot lots of various ones. Spray and pray. Happiness is a warm machine gun. What I find interesting.. watching someone shoot one for the first time. Having some firepower in your hand or mounted on a tripod. Watching the determination of the shooter to successfully destroy a target. And then the hunger to do it again. Ever seen a kid have a toy taken away. Not good.

    to each is own. personally, i think its a waste of ammo and a good service life of a rare breed of gun and its parts. to those that can afford it, blast away.

    Shot plenty of them in the Army! I would love to have a couple and may in the near future. But they are definatly not something to go shoot on a daily basis due to the cost of ammo.

    Lots of fun to shoot, expensive to feed. Even if the cost of the FA dropped due to a change in legislation, etc the only thing I could afford to feed would be something in 22...

    OF course, a full auto scale model of a 1919 from tippman would kick butt....

    Fun, interesting in a mechanical sort of way, expensive to get and feed, I prefer the 3-shot burst triggers, but can't afford to feed the ones I've got now!
    Much rather play with suppressors and Destructive Devices; nothin' beats poppin' a few caps on a M240, and then sneaking up on the debris with a suppressed 10-22!

    It is nice to see that someone agrees. I know a lot of people hd a problem with the 94' ban ending but I am sure gald to see the prices things afterward and now.

    I would like to see the 86' ban lifted. Guns would come down a little but not like everyone would like. I highly doubt the legislation will ever go backwards on them. Still if a M-16 could be bought for 1/2 price at $7500 there would be bellyacher's saying it was still too much. [:D][:D]

    nice if someone else is buying,...not for me though. Would I like to have one,..yes. But am I going to pay the REDICULOUSLY OVERPRICED rate for one,...heck no. Some retard set the pricing for these things. Can someone tell me where a few very minor changes and a trigger group make a rifle cost 6K-20K[?] It's called americans paying for something they just have to have. I have fired a few,...but unless the owner came down to about 1/3 of what he paid,..it can stay in his safe and I'll just shoot it every now and then. Rediculously priced,..or I would maybe have one to play around with,..but then again there is the extra cost of having a dozen extra NIB barrels laying around also[V]

    A properly learned heavy barreled bolt action with top notch glass is the deadliest weapon on the battlefield.[}:)] Of course it involves much more training and discipline,....but pin-point directed fire beats a bullet hose 6 ways till Sunday.

    The History channel just covered the MG42 with a cyclic rate listed on the web of 1100 - 1500 rounds per min. (depending where you look). It made me think of the ammo costs.

    F/A would be nice for S*its and Giggles as a novelty, but it's got to get awfully expensive fast.

    I'd never buy one for myself. I'd rather run a thousand rounds thru a 1911 pistol than a Thompson SMG.

    I have greatly enjoyed shooting other's FA's or agency FA's...There is not way I would want to own one.

    I have fired every thing from a BAR through a 40mm (the Navy classified it as a "Heavy Machine Gun" at the time). I would love to have one. A full auto M-16 would make me smile so much that it would hurt[:D]

    I have no practical use for such a weapon, but it sure would be fun[:)]

    I guess the bottom line is you either like them or dislike them. They are of course firearms.. or are they? Have you ever thought of their purpose? Only one. To Kill. Fortuneatly they can be enjoyed on shooting targets, and just having fun ripping off some rounds. Can't hunt with them, but yet they are the most desireable limited supply guns out there. Supply and demand dictates the price. Now as far as comments about sniper long range blah blah blah... different application from a .50 Browning or belt feed .30 running a straif across a target. I haven't seen a jet fighter with a single shot airgun lately.. Cost??? I have never heard a MG owner complain what it cost to shoot their toy. Never. Obviously one can afford to shoot or they wouldn't own em' .. bout like a parachutist complaining it cost aviation fuel to get them up in the air so they can enjoy the ride down. They are all about FUN.. meeting other MG owners getting together and shooting up a storm. Regardless the cost MG's will be bought and sold as long as they stay legal. In the event they are outlawed, get ready to have your other guns banned also.
