Deputies: Suspect Shoots at People on Highway, Injures Trooper
(Newberry County) - The suspect in a dangerous high-speed chase that began in the Upstate and ended in the Midlands has been taken into custody.
The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Toby Rodgers of Ohio. He faces charges from the Highway Patrol of failure to stop for a blue light, speeding, and possession of a stolen vehicle. In Newberry County, he faces charges of resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer with intent to kill.
Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster says the chase between officers and a suspect began in Laurens County Friday afternoon. According to investigators, the man was driving a Ford pickup truck which had reportedly been stolen. The truck had Ohio license plates.
According to Foster, the chase continued on Interstate 385. Speeds were said to have reached 100 miles an hour. While the chase was going on, deputies say the suspect fired shots at officers, pedestrians, and other drivers.
The chase then continued on rural roads in Newberry County. Stop sticks were used to blow out the suspect's tires, but he continued driving for about 10 miles on his rims, still firing shots at officers.
Foster says the suspect then sideswiped a state trooper's vehicle, causing the trooper's car to wreck.
The suspect's truck finally stopped on Highway 121 in Saluda County. After a brief foot chase, the suspect was taken into custody.
Both the suspect and the trooper who crashed were taken to the Newberry County hospital. Rogers has since been released. The trooper's injuries are said to be minor.
