last night i awoke about three in the morning in agonizing pain, with a severe cramp in my calf.

over the years I have had the same thing happen in my feet, and my thighs. Not very often, once or twice every few years.

The next day it feels like i was hit with a baseball bat in that area.

anyone know what the hell causes that?
I get the same thing from time to time.

I had a doctor tell me it could be from lack of calcium. This could be true in my case as I never drink milk and I eat very little dairy products.

I get those often, and fairly sure mine's due to the MS.

    Dehydration...or a blood clot...I hope it's not a clot!

Divebomb,......if you are an older guy, you most likely DID pick the right cause.
My great uncle got those things after he was in his late sixties.
Never could explain it, but he said they hurt like heck, and like you, complained of soreness the next day.
Good news,.......he lived to be in his late eighties, so it must not be really of any danger![;)]

Most muscle cramping can be traced-back to a potassium deficiency.Either take a multi vitamin daily,or eat a banana every day. Be careful with Potassium suplaments, since it is one of the drugs used in "LETHAL INJECTIONS". To STOP THE HEART.[xx(]

Potassium is very unique,.......not enough, you can die, and too much, you can die!

+1 on calcium. I keep a bottle of Tums around just for the calcium. 3-4 a week and no more soreness or leg cramps. Cheap medicine.

Cause of death: potassium overdose [:D]

How much bananas with ketchup do you have to consume to die from too much potassium? [:D]

The problem lies with those of us on salt restricted diets subbing Sodium with Potassium for flavor,,,,
If you were a heavy salt user you could potentially do the same with the substitute!!!
Drugs for High BP drain the bodies potassium supply. Yes you need to watch it fairly close....
Leg cramps is a tell tale low potassium indicator... It could be blood clotting too if a couple glasses of OJ or a banana or two and drinking plenty of water don't correct it PDQ... get it checked fast!!!

It's funny while you're dead asleep you can feel it slipping in to that cramp. While you're still in that border of sleep, In your head you're screaming "NO, NO, NO, OH PLEASE NOT THE CRAMP". Jumping a wake, clutching that calf, cursing heaven and hell over it.

Quick cure for me is to grab the toe (if you can) and stretch it. Or limp out of the bed and do a heel extension on a step. Basically keep your toes on the step and let the heel hyper-extend below the toes.

Usually happens when my lazy butt walks more than usual (like going fishing for the first time in ages).

I recon hydration is a preventative even though I've been told it's lack of Potacium. I think it's more of hydration since I don't do bananas (something wrong with it's shape and texture. it's un-natural[:D]) and OJ hurts my tummy. So I don't do them. My money's on water. Just make sure it's worth the bathroom trips during the night.

Leg cramp or half a dozen trips to the can and feel bad from lack of sleep[:D].

Low potassium levels will cause the cramping. I've had it hit me while driving and have to almost crawl into a convenience store for Gatorade. We always keep a couple of gatorade bottles in the 'fridge now to jack the potassium back up. There's been many nights the wife had to go running downstairs for me at 3am!!

Like Blackroses said.. milk. MY doc said that calf cramps can be caused by a lack of VITAMIN D. I now take a supplement and the cramps are gone!

-Drink at least two quarts of water daily and, as noted earlier take a multi vitamin tab daily.....the senior variety, which has more calcium (compare the ingredients lists side-by-side). Also, have your MD prescribe a potassium supplement, but don't take them every day as he will prescribe them; only take them every three days and don't tell the doc. Also, go to the drug store and get bottle of salt tablets. Taking a couple of these with 8-12 oz. of water will help terminate the cramps problem within ten to fifteen minutes.

If you have heart problems, the salt tablet advice is hereby retracted.

I would get them when I was working Hot Repair on furnaces. Dehydration and potassium is what everyone said. I noticed when I took potassium I would get more cramps in my calves and it was more difficult to hold basic tools like hammers and chisel in the extreme heat. My hands would basically cramp up and become weak. I quit taking the potassium pills. I would eat salty food and fruit when I had to work in such heat, but I had trouble digesting refined sugar, refined wheat and soda.

Stay hydrated, take calcium and potassium, and you won't have the problem. Also, get your blood sugar checked to be sure you're not diabetic.

I had those really bad when I was Iron deficient. Once I got that squared away no more cramps. I was told to take potassium but that actually made them worse. I was severely Enemic to the point I was hospitalized for it.

I would be much more concerned about a deep venous thrombosis (blood clot leading into a pulmonary embolism) than I would be with leg cramps: symptoms are similar.
