Scope numbers?

I really dont understand what the numbers mean on a scope. Can someone break it down for me or just tell me which is the better deal.

Tasco 10-40x50 $126

Guide Gear 8-32 x 50 $81


Or any other suggestions would be great.

  10-40x50 would be 10x to 40x magnification with a 50mm objective lens.
  
  8-32x50 would be 8x to 32x wiht a 50mm objective.
  
  Are these spotting scopes/binocs or rifle scopes? Seems like too much mag. for rifle scope...

  Rifle- for shootin yotes, to go on a 22-250.

  ...definitely not too much magnification for long range shooting/varminting...both are cheap scopes, so don't expect to have top notch optics with either. They will probably get the job done though.

  for the price of either,..you will not be getting anything special, and I would bet that both start to "cloud up" as the power is increased. Not that you can't use them or that they won't work, but the coatings alone on the lenses of a top end scope will cost that much by themselves.
  
  Of the 2, I would tend toward the Tasco since you know who made it and where to send it in for it's eventual repair.
  
  the first range of numbers is always the magnification....
  3-9x40 means that is ranges from 3power to 9power with a 40MM objective lense size. This is how all scopes are labled.
  
  therefore 10-40x50 means from 10x to 40x with a 50mm objective lense.

  The 10-40x means that the object you are viewing will appear 10-to-40 times nearer that with the naked eye...and shame on you for having a naked eye, anyway.
  A 100 yard object will appear to be 10 yards away...
  
  The last number being the objective refers to the amount of light admitted thru the scope to your eye...theoretically, anyway. The sad fact is...a good quality scope at 40 mm will be clearer later in the evening then most of the 100 dollar scope with objectives the size of astronomical lens ...that require you to buy high rings and raise your cheek-weld so high you bang your adams apple every time you shoot...

  these are numbers you see on benchrest rifles, as fast as some coyotes come in you'll wish you had bought something along the lines of a 3x9x44 3x9x50 or 3x12x50 the ones you mention are simply too powerful unless your shooting the dogs at 200-300 yds and getting a standing shot

  Higher the power , less the field of view.
