Lengthened Forcing Cones
Why dont they lengthen them at the factory if it is so good for the patterns and the felt recoil?? What is the downside of having them lengthend?

Only downside I can find is that it might alter the value of a collectable shotgun. I had Briley lengthen the forcing cones on my Franchi Aristocrat when they installed screw in chokes and the patterns are beautiful. Two rounds of skeet still leaves my shoulder badly bruised however. 0 -
Well, if they made them long at the factory when they are shot-out you are out of options[8D] 0 -

who would know? I have never checked any of the shotguns ive bought.0 -
The Shadow would.[}:)] If you were buying a cased Parker, you might check such things. yeah, I wouldn't either. 0 -
What do you stick in there to check?? 0 -
look in your bore. see that dark ring about 2" down the breech? thats the forcing cone. if you see it, its there. its what your hull crimp seats against to allow the wad and hot gases to transfer into when it leaves the hull and enters the bore.
there are certain sami laws that a mfg'er must abide by. a shotgun must have a means to restrict backflash, limit travel of 3" mags in 2 3/4" guns, and also give a factory rated sami approved shell its best performance,(as to its true LUP/PSI.) most people that request forcing cone work are using reloads and downloading for less recoil, so maxing out a bores flash is minimal.
ive done it 1000's of times. all my pro guns are backbored...and i'll tell you, unless you shoot 250 rounds a day, and change guns, you wont be able to tell a difference. personally i think its just hype and a fad. but hey, if they want it, they get it.$$$0 -
Personally I would use my Galazan brass forcing cone measuring tool, with water buffalo horn handle. What would you use?[}:)] 0 -
A bore ga. The specifics about how long forcing cones should be, has changed over the years. With the advent of plastic wads the barrels and forcing cones have gotten bigger and longer, with sealing the gases becoming less important.
Kolar is now selling 12 ga. barrels with a .750 bore diameter. Many of the barrel wizards are "tuning" barrels for a particular load recipe.
Just trying to get that extra broken clay out of a hundred. Sometimes the difference between getting into the shoot-offs and leaving the shoot early to miss the traffic.
He Dog: Why don't you try some light one ounce loads? For skeet the max distance your shooting is about 20 yards. If the lighter loads don't help then look into gun fit. If it's hurting to shoot two rounds then you gun needs to fit better.
When practicing I will shoot a flat of shells in a day. And the last shot of the day is not painful at all.0
