Pet Opossum
anyone ever see a pet possum?

Opossum are very mean animals. Almost as mean as a coon. I have had a few close incounters with them and i don't want any more.
P.s. When you catch one in your trap and you think he is dead.
Be sure that he realy is dead before you try to release him from the trap. Made that mistake once, Won't do it again.[B)]0 -

Yup. My dog got into it with one before. It played dead and he let go. Tori was screaming for me to do something. I was in a towel getting ready for a shower. I went out. Dropped a 25lb rock on it's head from about 6' and said if it was still there when I got out of the shower, I'd get rid of it.
It was gone.
Later he pinned it under my deck. I got out an old 27" Katana, and ran the thing through it 6 times. I was going to use my Buckmark, but I live in town. It was the summer and I was about to go to bed for work in the morning. I left it and checked back in the morning, it was gone.
Even later my dog got into it with a smaller one, ripped it's side open. I put a 22CB in the Marlin 60, put the muzzle up to it's head and thump. Stuck it in a bag and threw it in the trash can.
The moral??? Put a bullet in it's head before touching one.0 -
killed a few of them for killing my chickens, shot one at about ten feet with 00 buck he got right back up, got a bit closer turned him inside out with round 2, he was suspect in gutting about 18 chickens, never would consider one for a pet, over grown nasty rat 0 -

The third pic should be enough to convince anyone from having one. I use to kill possums for a farmer friend. Shot one in the head six times point blank with a 22LR and it was still hissing at me. It took splitting its head open with a shovel to kill it. 0 -

yep had one use to sit on my sholder, then he climbed to the top of
my head those claws are sharp!! he did learn to fly that day.0 -
Caught some in a Havahart trap and they smelled like Hades. 0 -

possums have a place in this world, but I don't trust them. Putting a collar on them and giving them a name doesn't make me trust them more. 0 -
A few years back when i was a resident Kiwi(New Zealander)..the streets & motorways were littered with the little bstds..[:0]

possums are tough? my #1 rott pounced on one, wrapped his jaws around its midsection and went c-r-u-n-c-h!! crunch! crunch! (barking at it with his mouth full) crunch! crunch! it didn't put up a fight, that was it. and it was dead allright.

I know from experience that if you hit one in a big truck doing 60MPH they make one hell of a mess.
I have hit a couple like that and they exploded leaving blood and guts all down the side of my truck.[xx(] What a mess![xx(][xx(]0 -
It looks like a cute pet. The ones I have gotten close to stunk like hell. I guess if you gave him a shampoo he might be ok for a pet.
I got hold of a baby Mexican racoon once for a pet. He was a wild one. He spent a lot of time in a squirrels nest up in an oak tree. When I got home from work, he would sit on the roof, just above the door, and chirp at me as I entered the house.
You can't really domesticate a wild animal, they will always be pretty wild.
As for the possum being a s*** or garbage eater, have any of y'all ever eaten lobster or crabs? They taste pretty good, don't they? What do you think lobster and crabs eat? Throw a possum into the ocean, and the lobster and crab will eat possum, tail and all.0 -
Yes! I have rehabed many of them. They actually make wonderful pets. They will naturally use a litter box if one is available and actually groom themselves about like cats do. They are some of the most loving animals I have ever had. I had one for about 8 months because of some back damage it had. He NEVER damaged anything in my home and NEVER bit anyone. The others I had were all babies that were hand fed and raised to be released.
When Daivd and I were dateing I had a young male opossum that loved to sleep in my shirt. David can to see me one day and I simply said "be careful he is in there" David's mind shut down after the be careful and thought my horse had bit me too since it had bit him the day before. He got behind me and untucked the top shirt. Junior stuck his head out and David went screaming like a 2 year old across the living and dining room.
Funniest thing I have ever seen him do!
Now coons.. that is a nasty animal. I can tell you that I have only had one fo those that I didnt want to throw across the room.0 -

I found the best way to kill one was to just step on their chest for a minute. The pressure stops the heart. I have shot them till the head is mush and they still live. Mo humane to just step on them. Don 0 -

When they are caught in the wild they smell to high heaven. When i live in the south we used to hunt them to sell to the black people.

Bang from what I have experienced during my rehabs and delaing very closely with DNR and the state vet Levamisole works well on the parasites that orphans may have. We have always treated with it pretty much as soon as we could. Then if in captivity there is little to no risk of more parasites.0 -

When I was a kid, we passed a freshly killed possum on the highway that had babies, stopped and took them home. Tiny little things that we fed with a doll baby bottle. I can't remember how many there were, but, only one survived long enough to be big enough to be released into the wild.
Nobody has mentioned that they are marsupials and among the most primitive mammals. And, basically harmless to man.0 -
My girlfriend had one that would show up to eat the cat food off of her back porch. She lives in a little yuppie camp in a quite little town so I couldn't just shoot the thing when I ran across it. We brought the cats inside I went for a little walk out into the woods nearby and then I built a snare just off the back porch where the cat food is, and I moved the cat food dish, to make it only accessable by one means of entry (through the snare).
Sure enough I hit paydirt.
My girlfriend likes to wake up and go out back in the morning to say hello to her cats, and to see what the weather will be like. She found the trapped & dead possum.
That didn't go over very well, and I'm not allowed to build traps in the yard any more.0 -
