I'm a felon...you might be too!!

I have fond memories of my Dad letting me "drive" the car as a kid.
Heck, I've been known to do this with my kids.
IMO, another American tradition is now becomming history in today's Draconian society.[:(]


Mom faces charges for letting 7-year-old drive

LAKE MARY -- (AP) -- A Lake Mary mother faces felony child abuse charges after crashing while her 7-year-old daughter drove on her lap.

The vehicle crashed into mailboxes and hit a palm tree, but no one was seriously hurt. The child was treated for a scraped knee, a cut on her forehead and minor burns from the van's air bag.

Forty-two-year-old Lisa Lavoie told police the accelerator must have stuck when the child mashed it down.

The crash happened over the weekend near the family's home in Central Florida.

Police contacted child welfare authorities, who left the girl in her parents' custody. Her father was in the van but not injured.

    how does a 7yr old smash a peddle and steer while looking out the window? and she was supposedly sitting on moms lap????

    Anyone dumb enough to put a child on their lap while driving,
    should be convicted of child endangerment. The airbag issue alone
    should be enough reason not to do it. It could have cut the childs'
    head off.

    That's why I bought an old drivers ed car. Dual brake pedals. My 9 year old has been driving since she was 4!

    sheesh! sure they screwed up, but man pressing charges and contacting the child welfare jerks, thats just to much.

    America is no longer a free country...the gov't has to govern every aspect of your life...it's just to protect you, you know.

    teaching your kids to drive is a felony child endangerment......jesus christ....hell i have my 8 and 11 year old run tractor and grain cart for me during harvest.....big front wheel assist tractor and grain cart holds 54,000lbs of wheat and they drive it beside...about a foot away from straight head as I unload the combine into grain cart on go...wonder what crime i am guilty of....teaching my kids good hard working ethics!..........

    18 years ago at age 7 i learned to drive in the same way, on my grandfathers lap in his dodge diplomat in a cemetery. He said to me " at least here you won't kill anybody."

    when i was a kid my dad used to let me drive all the time while i sat on his lap. i steered and he did the breaks and gas. rarely ever on a city street but all the time in empty parking lots.
    whenever i hear the bruce springsteen song "my hometown" i think of those days...my dad even had a Buick....almost makes me cry

    I got a death sentence coming. the Boy used to steer cars in the dealership garage when he was 3 on my lap. On kart night at the track, we let all the kids pack the track in our race cars, and we're talking alone, taking turns, (with parent's permission) in ministocks. Hell, pa used to let me drive our family car up and down our dead end road, (as well as his Honda Cb 350 four).

    The world is becoming a wussed out shell of what we had when we were kids....

    The child was sitting on the mom's lap steering?...Okay, I would imagine we have all done that at one time or another BUT that kid must be a tad tall..

    I bought my first car when I was 12,,,,with my dads blessing,,,and drove it to my lawn mowing jobs with the push mower in the trunk[:0]for REAL. Could you imagine the outrage today,,, child labor, endangerment, cruelity to a child, Family services would take me from my home and put me in one where the male is a queer and the mom is a crackhead to protect me,,,imo,,nambu

    My 4 year old daughter sits on my lap driving my Silverado on gravel roads in Northern Ontario with no one around.

    She says "Daddy stay right underneath me!"

    I think in most states, allowing a child to drive is a misdemeanor, not a felony.

    If a parent would be charged is up to the discretion of the police officer making the stop, after he considers all the circumstances.

    If you are on your own private property, in my state, your kids can drive all they want.

    I don't want a bunch of unlicensed 9-12 year olds running up and down the roads I drive, but I did teach my kids to drive on my own property about the time they turned 9 or 10. I did so because I don't feel education is a drawback. I taught them about guns from the time they were old enough to walk and talk. I taught them about sex when I thought they could understand. One was 10 and the other was almost 12.

    I think there is a time and place to charge a parent when allowing a child to drive. I also think there is room for discretion and a warning depending on the circumstances.

    A wise old cop once said "There is law and there is common sense, and a good cop knows when to apply each and at the proper time." or something to that effect. That makes a lot of sense if you think about it.
