JACKSON, Mich. (AP) - Two grocery store employees have been fired after they didn't punch out while viewing a 300-vehicle procession funeral procession for a soldier who was killed in Iraq.

Polly's Country Market store produce manager Ron Klimmer and produce retail clerk Michael Wahr received notice of their firings in letters from the company mailed to their homes, said United Food and Commercial Workers Local 951 business representative Scott Gould.

They were punished for watching the June 19 funeral procession of Army Sgt. Matthew Soper. The Jackson resident died June 6 in Bayji, Iraq, of wounds from an improvised explosive device.

Gould said a grievance is planned.

"The union feels the company does not have just cause for termination," he told the Jackson Citizen patriot for a story Saturday.

Polly's employees were encouraged to view the procession, and about a dozen did so after punching out or taking their lunch breaks, said Polly's Food Service Inc. President Kim Kennedy.

Employees who did punch out while viewing the procession complained to management about Klimmer and Wahr, the company said.

"Those are the two that chose not to clock out," Kennedy said. "The one thing we do discipline very harshly is stealing, and we consider this stealing time."

Klimmer, a Polly's employee for 31 years, and Wahr, a seven-year employee, had been on suspension.

Klimmer said there were few customers during the procession and service did not suffer because they were outside.

"We might as well have closed anyway," he said. "There weren't enough customers to run a 7-Eleven, much less a large supermarket."

Klimmer said military veterans and others have expressed overwhelming support.

"A lot of people are disappointed," Wahr said.

Jackson-based Polly's is a family owned grocery chain founded in 1934 with stores in Jackson, Lenawee and Washtenaw counties.

I can see the stealing point but I think firing them was a little over board maybe 3 days without pay.
sounds like they were looking for a reason to fire them.\

This store has no patriotic base and I wouldn't but nothing from them-ever!

Sounds like there was a miscommunication to me...

Were they told to punch out when they were encouraged to view the processional?

If so, tough luck. But I'm sure their fine Union Representatives will break some knees negotiate these workers' jobs back.

The store is within spitting distance of my house and we occasionally go there. I can see both sides of the story.I do think fireing them was the wrong move to make.It doesn`t make for very good publicity does it. My guess is they had issues with these two and were looking for an excuse to get ride of them.It would have been wiser to write them up and finish them off at a different time if they had issues with them. Look where it`s got them. It`s an Associated press story so it`s everywhere and at least in the short term may cost them some business.
I do think it`s kind of stupid to encorage your employees to pay respects to the soldier, but do it on your own time. You know the employees were standing at the side of the road in there Polly`s attire.Kind of like free advertisment for the store on the employees dime. See what were doing? Polly`s supports the soldier and his family.Yeah,right. Just my 2cents

A couple of screw-off scum, trying to use the death of an American soldier to set up their retirement fund.

    A thief is a thief.

Now tell me how much they weren't thieves, guys.

Why didn't they just tell them that they should have clocked out and deduct the time or let them make it up later, unless they had been ordered not to in the first place. It still seems kind of extreme to me. I wouldn't shop there either, if that is the way they are.

I had a supervisor that was OK until I filed a grievence. He went back and checked my phone records (as well as a bunch of other things)for 6 months and found I had called the union twice on the departments dime. (I wasn't aware I couldn't do this because he had always said if it was work related, it was OK to use the departments phone card. He told me then that union contacts weren't work related) He made me pay about $6 for what cost the department about $1. I wrote him a letter and told him he might see another couple on the next bill because I had recently called them again and I didn't want him to be able to say it was a 2nd offense. I told him to send me the bill when he got it and I would give him another check and asked him to make me a receipt out for the one I already gave him. He never did charge me for the later ones.

I think he wanted me to make a big deal out of it so he could take further action against me, because I had filed the grievence. When I explained what happened and put it in writing, I documented that he was overcharging me for a mistake and I think he knew that could come back to haunt him and he decided to drop the matter.

Both workers and supervisors are supposed to be working towards the same end. Some people don't seem to realize that.
