Okay, so who is hunting this weekend? Hmmm?
I bagged a 4 x 5 whitetail buck last Sunday and already have my meat back from the butcher. Now my best friend wants me to take him hunting on Sunday. Gee, this is going to be a hard decision. Hmmm. Do I stay home and do work around the house all day, or drive less than an hour, hike another hour to my new "favorite spot" and see if I can stock-up my freezer a little more? Yep, you already know the answer. [:D]
So, how about you this weekend? Deer? Elk? Antelope? Bear? Moose? Cougar? Prairie Dog? Coyote? Foul? [^]

I am trying to teach a 13-year-old the fine art of whitetail deer hunting. Indiana just had a "youth only" weekend (Sept. 29th and 30th), during which we went out, and I discovered that the kid moves more than a bobblehead in the back window of a car with bad shocks, and waits for permission to even fart, let alone shoot. He's turned into a fine shot, but we need to work on the sitting still and taking personal responsibility (as in deciding to shoot, or not, on his own). So, since we don't hunt with bows, and firearms season is seven weeks away, we're headed into the woods in search of the fearsome fox squirrel, and its even more deadly cousin, the gray, which, as we all know, will utilize the cover of foggy mornings to creep up on hunters and mutilate them in their blinds. Get him used to sitting still and killing things without my saying yea or nay, and he'll be that much closer to ready for opening day.
This is a learning experience for me as much as for him. I've never had kids. He has a mother and her, uh, "partner". All I have to go on is common sense and remembering how my dad handled me and my brother. I call dad on a regular basis to say "thanks". I think he likes to hear that.0 -

Headed to central Idaho next week for our annual elk hunt. I will try to get some good pics and would like to share them. I usually go with a couple of doctors from Boise and a couple of their sons. You would not believe our camp. We even have our own cook (one of the doc's brother-in laws) comes up and pretends to hunt. Most our entourage looks like a Cabellas store is sponsoring them. After a few years it's starting to bother me, as I am always the worst dressed (from a fashion standpoint) in our camp.[:(]
The best thing is that they are crappy poker players and they have lots of money. I'm thinking, with the money I win this year, I will have to start spending some of it on Cabellas logo wear.[:)] Otherwise, they may not let me in their camp next year. Stay tuned.

That sounds like a great annual trip and to be able to do that with your son makes it a priceless memory! Have a great time and I'll look forward to your images. Are you bow hunting, or is Idahos' general (rifle) season that far ahead of Montanas'?

Stanford is about an hour south east of Great Falls on HWY 87, between Geyser and Hobson. Lots of goats in that area. Good luck!0 -

Next weekend is the opener for muzzle loaders here in NY. I have already taken a 312 lb (dressed) black bear this year. To me, it has already been a great fall season!

Not to derail the thread, and I suppose in a sense this doesn't really matter -- but the kid isn't mine. I wish he were. His mom and her partner (a girl I used to work with, and am still good friends with) tend toward that mentality which regards an excuse as being almost as good as an accomplishment, and all things that go wrong as someone else's fault. I might have been able to counter some of that, being a part of his life from day one. It's a touchy balancing act, now, trying to teach a kid to rise above his parents' values without insulting the parents.
I also would have been there to question (not necessarily reject, but to question, and seek alternatives to) the diagnosis, when the kid was six, that he's ADHD (attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder). Instead it was, okay, bring on the meds. Now, to put it bluntly, he's an addict. The question of whether or not he can, maybe, function normally without the drugs, is moot. He has been told and he believes that he can't.
No complaints. He's a good kid and will occasionally shock the hell out of me by making noises that sound suspiciously like they're coming from a man, not a boy. No one else is perfect in this world, me least of all. I regard his issues as challenges for both of us, and if the best I do in this world is instill some form of value and self-respect in the little brat, I will die content.
Those who consider "hunting" to be nothing more than the mindless killing of God's wee critters, really don't get it, do they?0 -

Next weekend is opener for me, for deer. 2 weeks later elk season starts! Yippee!![:D][:D][:D][:D] 0 -
Well, I got my second whitetail of the season yesterday. This time a good sized doe and I took her at 35 yards. My buddy had two opportunities and missed both of his shots. He complained all the way home and is convinced that his bow is the reason. Now he's planning on dropping a grand on a new Horton today. I suggested that he have his 2 year old $800 bow checked out at the shop before replacing it, but he'd already made up his mind last night and offered it to his neighbor. Although I shoot my bow for fun throughout the year, my serious pre-season practice starts on the 1st of August. For the following eight weeks I shoot for about forty-five minutes, 3 or 4 days out of each week. Needless to say, by opening day my shots are pretty consistent. My buddy told me that he only shoots in his backyard a few days before any hunt. He feels that the quality of his bow makes his hunting more successful. Funny, I guess he hasn't realized that practice makes the archer. I've been hunting wild boar and deer with my 10+ year old PSE and have yet to need anything newer or better. I bought it used for $100 and had a new string and peep put on it. [;)]
