Cop Accused of Leaving K9 in Hot Car

PHOENIX - A suburban police officer is accused of leaving a police dog in a patrol car for more than 12 hours on a 109-degree day, killing the animal.

Chandler police Sgt. Tom Lovejoy was booked into the Maricopa County jail on a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty after a two-week investigation into the death of a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois named Bandit. He was released later Wednesday, said Capt. Paul Chagolla, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's investigation showed Bandit was in Lovejoy's patrol car from about 9 a.m. to shortly after 10 p.m. Aug. 11. During that time, the investigation found, the officer ran errands, napped and ate out with his wife. Lovejoy later found the dog dead in the car.

"I am certain Sgt. Lovejoy has suffered greatly from leaving his police dog in a sweltering car," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a statement. "I do not relish the idea of compounding his sadness. However, Lovejoy must be treated like anyone else in similar circumstances."

Lovejoy said Wednesday night that he is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 25 and that his lawyer advised him not to comment further.

"With the sheriff railing on me right now, it's kind of hard to say anything," Lovejoy said.

Chandler Police Chief Sherry Kiyler said in a statement that the department respects and supports the criminal justice system and its processes, and that an internal investigation has been launched.

    This guy obviously doesn't give a s**t about dogs....why the hell was he a K9 Officer?

    Although we must remember the mother today that left a 2 year old in a car, while delivering doughnuts, and stayed for 7 hours.
    Kid is dead, and this is not the first time the same woman has done this.
    In Ohio though, it is considered an accident.[}:)][xx(][xx(]

    Edit: The cop though,........I think they should have about 3 K-9's given the attack command, on him. I rarely say anything bad about cops, but this dillsmack, needs to be gone!

    That femme in Ohio needs to be locked up. What happened was, she is assistant principal at a public school. It was a teacher work day, the day before classes started. She was providing donuts for the teachers. She picked up 3 dozen donuts, and headed for the school, forgetting the baby in the child seat in the back, which she was supposed to drop off at day care.
    At the school, she forgot the baby, but remembered the donuts.
    Went out at 3 pm, dead baby.
    No charges filed.
    Lots of people in Cincinnatti are steamed about this one.

    That b**** needs to do a couple years in jail, and Sheriff Joe's boy needs the same.
    He will look good in those pink striped jump suits. Wonder how he will like a bologna sandwich, breakfast, lunch and dinner?

    Yes Allen,........when I said she had done it before, it just didn't result in death. She has been cited a couple of times for leaving kids locked up in a car. And Gee,.......she is an assistant principal. God help us!!
    Another reason for "forced sterilization" IMHO![xx(]

    Talk radio around here has been getting lots of mileage out of this story.

    To make matters worse...he's the training officer, and the guy in charge of the K-9 unit with Chandler PD.

    That is one dumbazz cop, no common sense, no loyalty or concern for his four legged partner, he deserves to be fired immediately. It takes ALOT of taxpayer money to train one of those dogs. What an awful way to die, trapped in a hot car all day like that. At the very least, the police officer should have to spend two hours in the car parked in the sun with the windows rolled up to see just what it feels like.
