3 lbs of Mammoth Ivory
Got home this evening to find three pounds of mammoth ivory I won on Fleabay waiting for me. Its musty, dusty, smelly, dirty and discolored. Perfect for what I want it for. Doesn't look like much, but just wait until you see/I see what it transforms into. It's in bigger chunks than I've been getting, I see several good projects in this collection of pieces.

The scale is 6" (6 3/8" actually) long. Hard to believe that equals three pounds. It's beautiful tho', have to take care in making sure of the cuts before I make them and if I have to split it on the grain I need to avoid stressing and breaking it. I look forward to working with this. The one big piece in the backleft is 3/4" thick and almost 6" around the circumfurence of the outside surface and almost 7" long at the longest point. Doesn't seem like much I know but I see a set of grips in there, well possibly, depends on how it cuts. If there are a few cracks it just gives it character. Or I may have to stabilize it with epoxy.

Nice - Show us when you make some progress. I always wanted to try knife handles with ivory, but know hardly anything about it.... 0 -
