PAWN SHOP LAWS
Wanted to buy a rifle at a pawn shop, filled out the form and they started typing and asking my address, phone number and SS number. told the WHOA! SS number is not required and they said it was federal law, told them they were wrong then they said it was state law and I told them I didn't think so. Then they said it was a Indiana pawn shop law![?] Anyone hear of such a law? Didn't buy the gun. If I'm wrong I will apologize to them and buy the gun.

SS number on the 4473 is optional but many folks are ignorant of this. In their defense, the ATF has the FFL holders scared to death to leave any field blank - if you see how nit picky and ridiculous the ATF audits are you would understand the FFL dealers point of view. 0 -
I always explain to my customers that the SSN is voluntary and might help avoid unnecessary delays... 0 -

I've purchased several firearms through pawnshops in Indiana and just a couple weeks ago had a GB purchase go through one. I've never been asked for my SS#.

they ask you for the ssn to see if you have one. most people that flinch at putting it down, usually dont have one, thus they usually are illegal aliens. my gun store knows me, thus they dont ask me for it. i look at it like this, put it down if you REALLY want the gun, if they misuse your ssn, imagine all the bucks youd get from a lawsuit against them! 0 -
Never been asked to put it down on the form but I do it anyway just so that there's no mistake about who I am. Besides, there are numerous ways for even a high school computer-literate kid to find out what a person's social security number is.
Government agencies share that information as freely as do banks, credit reporting agencies, background check firms, licensing bureaus, hospitals, etc. It's the one solitary and unique identifying number that follows a person around his or her entire life. They can't go on just a name and address alone since there are probably a million or more John Smith's in America, many of whom live on an Oak, Elm or Main Street somewhere.0 -
Guess I didn't explain this well enough. They didn't want it on the form, they wanted it to enter in to their computer. Don't know if they were going to put it on their sales receipt or what. They already had my drivers license in front of them and had typed its info when they asked for my SS number. Have tried to find any law that pertains to that to no avail. Could be it is just store policy. 0 -
why is it on the back of our original SS card it says "Not to be used for indentification purposes"
what part of that doesn't businesses understand.
I've bought a few guns in pawn shops here in Idaho and haven't had that problem (yet)
I have name and address on my checks, no DL, no SSN and if clerks ask for id I show them but refuse to allow the numbers to be put on the check, and yes this has led to many buggies of supplies, tools, etc left at the counter because I don't budge on it, not for the manager or store policy, I have the right to shop elsewhere.
If they have a problem they have my house/mailing address DL and SSN isn't going to find me any faster0 -
Your SSN is not required to purchase a firearm. Commercial establishments (with exception of banks and employers) do not have a valid reason for requesting it. 0 -
The ATF 4473 form is federal, why would "any" state be worried what info is on it? ...If "extra" info/I.D.#s is needed then the state would require their own form. 0 -
ROSIE: by law if someone says they require your SS number they have to provide you with a written copy of said law.. I got a money order from some guy who got it at AMSCOT, went to cash it and they ask me for my SS number, I refused and they tried to tell me it was the law for me to be put into their system before they could cash it.. I called their manager and politely ask him to provide me with the law that said that my SS number was any of their business, He couldnt, and after a bit of argueing they cashed their own money order with my DL for identification... 0 -
Whats the big deal, everybody knows your SS# is 000=0000-001[:D] 0
