Can we talk knives?
Knives seem to go along with guns, most people who enjoy using one usually enjoys the other. Whats your favorite general purpose knife? The one you have with you most of the time and use about every day for one thing or another, folder or otherwise. I'd also appreciate some advice on sharpening. I have never been able to really get back that keen edge my knives had when new. I've tried some of the gadgets and stones but still can't get it right. Anyone got a real good method to keep an edge without grinding away my blade like I have done so many times?

Hello knives I agree are like guns except You can use and carry for many different uses I like a OLD TIMER Sharp Finger for skinning Squirrels for field dressing large game Dear Etc I like a 3 blade folder with saw gut blade and knife blade made by the same people that make the swiss army knife. For hiking I like the Case HOBO this has knife and fork so you can eat without &*%$ing plastic fork For going out in my Sunday best I have a dress Damascus folder by Gurganus and for SSAS I have a Damascus Arkansas Tooth-Pick and for work a CHEAP "because I lose them" folder. 0 -

I am sitting here "wearing" 3 knives.
One is on a cord around my neck. Another is a side lock --- don't bother with a side lock --- it is an accident looking for a place to happen. The other is a "fruit" knife. Long and skinny has a blade and a two tined fork on the other end.

I carry 1 of my two Kershaws everywhere. You can find illustrated depictions on the 'net of how to sharpen a knife using stones, including angle of blade to stone, what grit to use and so forth. 0 -
Thanks guys. I've been carrying a Spyderco with a pocket clip almost every day for about 10 years now. Can't wear it out but can't get it as sharp as I would like. Also carry a Leatherman Wave or Gerber multi when I may need pliers and screwdrivers. I really like the looks of that Ka-Bar. I was wondering if anyone had used any of the devices that hold you blade at a proper angle. I am using stones now but can't seem to get it right to the sharpness I want. Bought some of those fibre wheels that you glue grit on once at a gun show. Really could get a razor edge with those things, but eventually ruined my Gerber bolt action by grinding away too much metal. 0 -
My most used knife is a Buck-Lite I bought about 20 years ago. As for sharpening I was fortunate enough to be taught by someone who know what they where doing a long time ago (when I was 10). And after much practice and going through a couple of beaters, I finally learned the craft. There are some good articles out there on "how to". I would suggest reading up and practice, practice then practice some more (not on your good knives at first).

I have a Swiss Army knife that my younger brother tried to sharpen many years ago with a bench grinder. After many many hours using a stone, I got a very good edge back on it. 0 -

Puma Trail Boss 4 1/4" folder. A little big for daily pocket but has been with me since 1975. Hard to sharpen but holds edge well. 0 -
SOG knives are really high quality. They are used by the Navy SEALS. I don't have one yet, but I know someone who does and he beats the hell out of it and hasn't had any problems yet. 0 -

At work I carry on my belt the gerber multi-tool with the blasting cap crimper on it (if that tells you what I do for a living). Otherwise I carry either a Boker ceramic pocketknife (had it for a couple years now and never needs sharpened) or a Gerber money clip pocketknife. The Boker is a great little knife. 0 -

Since that's what i do, make/buy/sell custom knives i have a fairly decent collection of custom knives from various makers. But my daily carry was a S&W automatic...til i lost it.[B)] 0 -
I carry a Gerber Paraframe with the titanium nitride finish. 3-inch blade. Takes a very sharpe edge and holds it well. 0 -

I have two,, both small folders.. Case XX 1979 Coke Bottle 27 1/2 given to me by Case's Grandson.. The other is a three inch bladed folder I made myself..[:D] 0 -
My 'pocket knife' is either a Case medium framed three bladed stockman, or a fully loaded Victorinox Swiss Army Knife with Phillips head screwdriver instead of the cork screw.
If I anticipate any kind of fiddling around, I'll put my sheathed Gerber Multi-tool on my belt. I simply love that 'flip-out' sound and action from that knife.
Otherwise, I'll wear a sheathed Buck 110 Hunter, or a Kershaw Black Horse II.
I have two hunting knives, neither of which has ever skinned a thing. One is an inexpensive Gerber and the other an inexpensive Winchester. Both however, keep wonderfully sharp edges and wear well.
As to sharpening, I'm a proponent of the two grade Arkansas Stone school, followed by an old fashioned razor strop, which, when used on my backside as a kid was called a 'razor strap', but I wasn't nowhere near so inclined to split hairs back then.
However, convenience is what keeps Lil' General and Seven Eleven in business, and not being immune to the siren song of convenience myself, I most often use the 'two ceramic rods placed in angled holes in a piece of wood' system. This keeps the angle of the blade just right, if I hone on an even up and down keel. For quick touch-ups in the field I have a very old six inch long, ceramic electrical insulating tube, taken from a house I was helping tear down many years ago. A leather thong through it not only helps me keep it close to hand, but also helps me maintain a stronger hold and better angle when sharpening with it.
I clean ceramic sharpeners occasionally with a blast or two of brake cleaner or carburetor cleaner, followed by a stint in the dishwasher.
Whatever I sharpen with, I use firm strokes at first in order to get that all important turned edge, then, toward the end of sharpening I lighten up on the strokes, getting an even finer genuine edge while losing that turned edge.
