American pie.

i know what happens when you assume, however i would venture a guess that most of us either know the song, or have at least heard it. the one by don mcclean. i have heard different stories relating to what this song is about. one is that "the day the music died" is in reference to that fatefull day that we lost so many rock greats, buddy holly, the big bopper, and ritchie valens. another story says that it is refering to john lennon, or evan the guy from the doors. does anyone know the scoop? or is it just a song? any place that says for certain? and have i just had to much caffeine and its affecting my mind this late at night?

    I heard recently in an interview that Don McClean said even if he told us what the song meaning was, no one would believe him because it was so simplistic or something like that.

    Frankly, I don't care for the song that much. Everyone touts it as the greatest rock song ever, but I think it's rather dull.

    interesting, i like the song, however i wouldnt say greatest rock song ever. it does seem to hold a certain popularity tho. i do know a guy that works as a radio dj, and he said it used to be a bathroom song. that it was long enough, they would slap it on and head to the crapper and would have enough time to get back before it ended, he said they used smoke on the water and the extended version of free bird as bathroom songs too.

    I always thought it was about the death of one of those 1950's greats (and yes, a particular one of them--Buddy Holly?).

    But I wouldn't know who because none of them really lit my fire.

    It isn`t about John Lennon because he died years AFTER that song was written.

    Song was about R Vallens. John Lennon was murdered in 1980 I think

    Dogpile it - it is definitely about the Buddy Holly plane crash, "I can't remember if I cried when read about his widowed bride...."

    My morning bathroom song was Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald in the evening I could play Mountain Jam by the Allman Brothers - it took up 2 sides of a double album [Eat a Peach], you could run to Burger Chef if you wanted (which I didn't, that would violate FCC regs)

    A buddy of mine had a 3yr old little boy that could sing that word for word, beginning to end...was cute. Strange, but little kids seem to like that song for some reason.

    It's slow enough that they can understand the words, and the key is right for them to pretty well hit the notes.

    Yeah, "Vincent" is a great song.

    Ten years ago I had a girlfriend who had a little 5 year old daughter.
    That kid loved "American Pie."
    She knew all the words and would jump up and down and sing along when it came on the radio.
    I had a vintage '61 Chevy Impala. I swear that kid was in heaven to be sitting in the giant back seat of that Chevy and singing along to that song. She would say, "Allen, take us to the levee."

    When I saw that video, I thought it was pretty neat so I emailed it to myself. That way I can keep track of it.
