meat goats
Anybody here ever raise meat goats? I was thinking of getting a starter herd but i don't know if they will be profitable or not. I know they sell 'em at the local stock yards but never really got my butt over there to look at anything.

My mom & dad still have some. We raised em when I was in middle and high school and my dad just kept up with it after that. Had a couple of Spanish meat goats and now the herd is only Boers. This is in South Carolina and I don't know of anyone around that eats goat but Mexicans/Hispanics. Profitable, I don't know about that. Goat prices don't compare to cow prices, at least in my experience. 0 -

Yeah, i think cows bring more money and they do taste better. i just thought goats would be easier to raise and they could do some brush removal. kill two goats with one stone. 0 -
Nothing like a barbqued goat! Hard suckers to skin though. And Lord, don't mess around and kill an old Billy. They are terrible smelling and the meat tastes like they smell. But a nice young yearling...YUM! [:p] 0 -
We have a small herd of goats. Some of which are the Boer meat breed.
Price wise, they are a lot more profitable than cows, imo. A goat costs nowhere close as much to feed as a cow. 100% Boers can go for as much as $500-550 around here.0 -
Btw, goats arent nearly as easy to take care of as you probably think.
I always thought you bought them, turned them loose, and sold them when the time came. WRONG! They require being wormed every 6 weeks, their feet trimmed every 6 weeks, and (from my experience) they can get ill pretty quickly and easily.0 -
Cabritto (sp) --- wonderful. I love it. However, goats are a pain in the posterior. They can climb anything, jump, crawl, mess on, eat, defile, whatever is around and they stink. But they taste good. Think of them as tame deer. They are that much trouble. 0 -

You don't need to trim their hooves if you have some rocks/piles of broken concrete for them to climb on. Those surfaces help them trim their own hooves. As for worming only 6 weeks, well we worm them once every 6 months and have never had a problem. Worm problems are encountered more often when they forage in fields/woods/pastures that are sandy-soiled or if they are confined too many per acre and have no choice but to eat near their droppings. Goats are extremely hardy animals and can find their own sources of minerals if need be. Try to keep the horned ones far enough away from the fence using multiple strands of hot wire at various heights, or they'll get their heads through the fence and tear the hell out of it.0 -
Old Billy goats smell so bad because they urinate on their faces. It is part of the social structure of goats. Smells like an old goat has a real basis. Capritta and sangria is a Mexican specialty and can be very good. Good luck on your animal adventure. 0 -
i have 120 head of boer & boer x nannies
make sure your fence will hold water and elephants
you want to sell before holidays or around 50 -70 lbs at the yard last sell the weathers brought around 1.02-1.25 a pound
and yes you need to trim there hoofs even on rocks
and we worm ours 2 times a year and give them a CDT shot once a year0
