I like it! Those old mod 99's are great guns! Wish Savage still made them. If you are going to keep it, looks like a little elbow grease and some stain will fix the stock. 0 -

A diamond in the rough.
You done good, Son.
By the way, I have a pretty nice classic Redfield Widefield 2-7 that would look very good on it. The scope has been looking for the right rifle for maybe 6 years.
Nice iron.

I was told to use some stock shine or somethig to the like to bring back the grain of the wood
I was thinking if I keep it I may redo the stocks not sure .0 -
You did just fine on that deal. If that is a 99E, which it looks like it is, it's the twin to mine before I refinished it.

It's an indicator which sticks up when the action/lever is completely closed and locked. When you open the action you will see it go down. Similar to the little "wedge" on a model 336 Marlin.0 -

Because it has the lever safety, you can relieve the pressure on the firing pin by pulling the trigger while closing the lever and the cocking indicator will go down into the reciever.
Can't do that with the tang safety models.
Good score, even if it is the "E" model with birch stocks.
Wish it was mine.0 -
You done well!!!! I have two 99's in 308, one is the clip model and the other has the rotary Magazine!!!
THe 99's are great guns, they were a design well ahead of their time, the only drawback I have with them is they are noisy when working the action!!!
I agree get rid of the scope!!!
Depending on what part of the country you are in the old 99's are drawing big $$$$$, especially unaltered and original, sometimes 2 to 3 times their book valu!!!
Also!!!! Rub the stock down with some oil and it will look 100% better, you won't have to refinish it!!! I bought one cheap cause it looked like that, I cleaned it good and rubbed it down with oil and it looked new. I showed it to the guy I brought it from, and he couldn't believe it was the same gun!!!
The 250/3000's and 22 high powers especially bring top dollar, if their a take down they bring even more. The tang safetys are the newer ones, collectors prefer the older ones with out the tang safety!0 -
...Gotta love those 99's.
...Clay, the stock is hardwood, very tight grain and HARD. The factory technique for most hardwood "stain-jobs" is spray on, then not wiped off...as 99% of the stain would come off the raw hardwood.
...You can strip off the flaking finish and clean it all you want but the fact is that the grain is so tight (what little there is) it will take very little stain.
...Blonde or orange are the two basic colors you may very well end up with. If you want a nice stock to go along w/the 99, you wont get there from here with hardwood...[;)]

so I should just oil it up and leave it alone [?][?] sound ok to me [:D]0 -
...Clay, the clear that is over the "stain" will not take oil. Hardwood that is finished is a bitch to deal with and won't ever look "good". To get it evenly finished you will have to get the clear coat the factory applied off first. You can then get a stain and apply then clear/oil finish. No matter the stain you use the hardwood will not "take" much of it and most will wipe off.
...All Im saying is that if you want a shooter and it shoots well that's great. If on the other hand you want a shooter that really looks good too, the hardwood wont get you there, no use spending a lot of money trying to overcome physics...you mentioned "maybe" not keeping it...that's why I mentioned the finish, may save you some time and $$$...[;)]

Apply a light coat of light oil and rub it down, the flaking will be much less noticeable!!! 0
