2 Officers Killed Responding to 911 Call
    Updated 10:35 AM ET September 9, 2007

ODESSA, Texas (AP) - Two police officers responding to a domestic disturbance were killed and a third was critically wounded by a gunman who led authorities on an hours-long standoff, authorities said.

Investigators said a woman leaving the home Saturday night told the responding officers her husband had hit her. When the officers were unable to enter the house through the front door, they tried to go in the back door, where a man came out shooting at them, said Tela Mange, a Department of Public Safety spokeswoman.

The suspected gunman, Larry White, 58, went back into the house, where he held police in a four-hour standoff until he surrendered around 10 p.m., Mange said.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting deaths of Odessa Cpl. Arlie Jones, 48, and Cpl. John "Scott" Gardner, Mange said.

Cpl. Abel Marquez remained hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the face, Mange said.

White, who was shot in the abdomen and was in stable condition at a hospital under police guard, likely will face two counts of capital murder and attempted murder of an officer, Mange said. It was not immediately clear who shot White.

"This is a tragic day for Odessa," Mayor Larry Melton said. "Our concern now is for the families of the officers."

Odessa is about 300 miles west of Austin.

Sadly enough this hits EXTREMELY close to home. I grew up one house down from Larry. I used to mow his yard as a kid. I never knew Larry to be a violent man. I am still shocked and saddened to know this happened. He was a decorated Vietnam Vet. He taught me a lot of what I know now about guns. As soon as I heard about this I called 2 of my friends back home that I knew were officers and warned them he would be heavily armed as he had an extensive gun collection. This is a sad sad day for the Odessa Police Department and those officers families. Only 4 officers have ever been killed in the line of duty there including the 2 from last night.

According to a lot of flawed logic, the following groups of people are evil for the actions of one man:

    - Vietnam vets

    - Texans

    - Men

    and

    - Gunowners

Thank goodness no one around these parts ever makes blanket statements like that. Why, it might make us look stupid and ignorant if we did.

Now try printing my entire quote!

It really doesn't help your position to take my words out of context when my whole post is the one right before yours...

Very sad news to hear I will pray for their family and fellow Officers. This is why I say they are no routine calls in LE work.

"Domestic disturbances" known to be one of the potentially deadliest calls for an officer to receive.

Terrible outcome. Will be praying for families of officers and for entire community.

2 officers were stabbed yesterday when they responded to a "Domestic Disturbance" call here in So Cal.

A woman and her daughter were at it when they arrived. The woman attacked and stabbed both officers before one of them put her down for good.

I have been on hundreds of these type calls and you never know what to expect. You cannot assume anything... just be very very cautious.

Domestic disturbances are the worst of the worst.
I am not a LEO, but I would be hard pressed to get involved with that scenario with my CCW.
    I don't "have" to,........the cops DO!
The proverbial "poor abused" female, and then they turn around and attack their rescuer!
    Screw them![xx(]

Corporal Abel Marquez passed away just after 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. He and his two brothers made an agreement long ago, that if one of them should be killed in the line of duty, life support would be removed, and their organs donated.

Earlier on Wednesday, Sergeant Pete Marquez and Corporal Philip Marquez attended the funerals of fellow officers Cpl. Scott Gardner and Cpl. Arlie Jones. Services for each of those men were held separately in Odessa. The Lubbock Police Department provided 11 motorcycle officers to escort and monitor traffic.

All three officers were shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Odessa Saturday night. The suspect, Larry White, is in custody charged with capital murder.

A fund is now in place to help the families of the Odessa officers with their expenses. If you would like to make a donation, you can do so at any branch of Lubbock National Bank.

How about let's send your sentiments to Odessa PD and the families of the slain officers? I would give a pretty to see you say out loud what you wrote, to the widows and orphans, and maybe to some of their friends. You might have to leave off making stupid offensive posts for a while.

That's about all. If I continue, I will violate the rules.
