I've heard them a hundred times while hunting but don't see them often.

    I see these fairly often, however, the Downy and Hairy woodpeckers are at the suet cakes most every day. Pileateds like dead trees, especially close to the base, where they can find insects. Nice photo.

    They are a very obnoxiously noisy bird but they leave my place as soon as I am out and around doing stuff. I have read that they are a shy bird and avoid humans. Thats why we don't see them as much as we hear them.

    Yeah nice photo, i see smaller versions of that a lot on my place. I take that as the sign of a blessing on our farm. The guy that owned our place before us put bird houses everywhere and we have tons of FAT robins, blue birds and cardinals. I'm not a bird guy but i just love it! If i still smoked i'd have a beer or a fat glass of wine and a punch cigar and chill on the swing.

    nice photo,they are the 2nd biggest woodpecker here in US of course there is the ivory billed even bigger a species that lives in eastern txs and louisana deep woods swamps,experts thought they were extinct for yrs,pilated lives usally in the deep forests also that tree must be dead and full of hibernating or active insects,they have a loud call dont they,and thier drumming or pecking is loud also[:D]

    Yeah. The tree is dead and infested with some insect that bores into the tree and lays eggs. I hope that woodpecker eats ALL of them!

    When I lived in Ga we had smaller red cockaded (sp) woodpeckers that lived in a pine stand behind my house. They are a protected species and I found out later that the state would have bought my land and moved me if they knew there was a nesting site there.

    I've got some sort of woodpecker that drops by about twice a year.

    When I lived in Ohio, they were all over the place.

    By now Ft Bragg, NC has 'prolly had thousands of acres put off limits to training because of the red-cockheaded wood-peckers! Before I left there in '92 there were significant problems for any unit commander who allowed training/troops within a certain distance of those birds! They are 'sposed to be very shy and fairly rare! Funny, we saw/heard LOTS of them! *LOL*

    We had about 30 turkeys inmour yard today. Sorry, no photo-I was putting an alternator & battery in my wife's truck and didn't even think about taking a picture.
