Isn't Thailand one of those places whee you can buy anything with the right amount of money.

When I was there nothing seemed especially worth buying except the food.

What you DON'T want to buy is semi-precious stones. There are lots of jewel cons running around Thailand. They'll try to make you think it was your idea to buy the stones.

I have heard that the only place to buy jewelery over there is the government run jewelery stores. It is a little more expensive, but you have a much smaller chance of getting ripped off.

My wifes brother's, brother in law is a truck driver in Iraq. And he takes his R&R in Thailand. Got a steady GF there and everything.
He sends all kinds of stuff home. Rolex watches & gold chains etc. Says he gets em CHEAP. Is he getting ripped off on fakes?

Make sure your GG shot is current [:p]. Mekong Whiskey if you can bring it back is always a nice souvenir. Jade chess set is another.

Baht chains were the in thing. They never go out of style. Some real Rolexes are in the shops. Demand to take the back off and look before you buy.

I was last there many years ago, but if it is still like it was:

Bronzeware sets can be pretty stylish, and quite different than the run-of-the-mill Silverware...

Jade items of any sort were cheaper than anywhere in the Pacific Basin...

Semi-precious and precious stones (IN Mountings of 18K Gold) were more beautiful, more varied, and less costly than anywhere in the Pacific Basin(Pearls and Diamonds Excepted)...

"Princess Rings", while available elsewhare, were cheaper, more varied, and more beautiful in/From Thailand than anywhere else I travelled...

Any item in 18K Gold was a good deal, and I had many items made to my specifications in a day or two, in Gold and/or Silver, in an area then known as the "Rose Garden". 18K Gold items were not so common anywhere else in the Pacific...

Price things before you go, know the Gold Prices, and drive a hard bargain - if they readily agree to your price, then you bid too much...

Items in Teak and Mahogany were also pretty inexpensive.

This girl is not pure Asian. I think there is a round-eye in the woodpile.
Let's see, she is twenty years old. What American tourists were visiting Bangkok in 1986?

And yours is REAL??For $35.00?? I doubt it.One test is to see if the second hand "jerks", from position to position, or "Sweeps" the dial in a smooth, fluid movement.[;)]

I work at a jewelry store and I see Rolex knock-offs all the time. Some of the better knock-offs will have automatic movements that make the second hand sweep. Some are hard to tell if they are authentic. The best way to tell if it's real is how much did you pay for it? If you got it for a couple hundred dollars or less, unless it's stolen, it's more than likely fake. Real Rolexs start at around $2000.

maybe it would help to think in categories to come up with something specific.

    -electronics
    -gold/gems/jewelry (not recommended, above)
-novelties specific to thialand, like clothing, swords (of course), house decorations
    -liquors/tobacco/other, pipes, hookas, etc
    -rare coins/paper money?
    -women

    what else is there?

    bring your camera!

1.Fatstrat.how much does a truckdriver make in Iraq ?
2.Mekong whiskey gives me (and most people) some kind of muscle tics
That can be very amusing for others to see.
3.Gold from Chinatown ofcourse. You might want to ask the storeowner if the craftsman have some extra nice piece he made, up for sale (costs slightly more)Instead of the regular stuff that hangs on the walls.
4.If you feel thirsty in the daytime [;)] Go to Soi Cowboy and continue down to sukhumvit soi 23 find the gate and enter the garden there with an outdoorsbar with flowers, tropical birds and stuff. It's really a nice place to sit in the afternoon.
    5.bout shopping http://www.hasekamp.net/markets.htm
