20 mm rifle?

What would this rifle be used for? I know thats a silly question but what is a serious application for a rifle like this? I am assuming that shell is placed next to a .50 round. Would this shoot more accurately than the .416 Barrett, would it shoot farther? Why doesnt the military employ such a round?
Even though I probably could never realistically have a need for a weapon like this it makes me drool and I want one... I would trade my new truck even up

We do use the round, but not that rifle. It's on the F-16 (the Vulcan 20mm) and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Something's telling me Cobra helos have it, too, but that may be a 25mm.0 -

I doubt the accuracy would be better than a .50 BMG.
There was a member here that got ran off by the trolls, that was experimenting with a 20mm case, necked down to .50 cal. Last I heard his preliminary results were quite impressive.0 -
Have seen a 20mm rifle before.. single shot.
Built on a Walther barrel.. it WAS quite impressive in accuracy, it was burn close to 50bmg if not better.0 -

20mm (.80 cal) Anti Material Weapons have been around for years.
Croatia developed the RT20 in the mid 90's. South Africa has had the Mechem NTW-20 since the early/mid 90's.
Their appeal is that the 14.5 mm ammo is capable of punching holes in, around 15mm thick amour out to around 2300 meters. While the 20x88mm MG151 anti-aircraft ammunition delivers a high explosive round out to about 1500 meters.
Saw a news program years ago about a guy from Croatia or somewhere in the area coming to the US to buy .50 cal rifles from different dealers and transporting them back to be given to people around his country for sniper use. Problem with his doing so was. If he got caught he was a dead man.

In the late 40's we (the US) had a 60cal HMG round (13.9x110mm IIRC). We both necked it down to 50cal (50/60HV) and got some impressive velocities, again IIRC, 4000fps (remember this was the early jet era) and up to the 20x110mm. The 20x110 is the papa to todays 20x102mm, so there is no reason to think that a 50/20x102 would be anything less than "effective".
# 1 is a 50MBG, # 2 & 3 are Russian, # 4 is the 60HMG and # 5 is the 20x102 (some day I want to add a 50/60HV to my collection)0 -

One of the most known 20MM based wildcats was the .50 McMillian FatMac. It is basically a 20MM cannon case that was shortened and necked down. The big problem they had was that the cartridge was severly overbore as the case held 415 grains of water. Just think of a 30 Caliber cartridge that had a 150 grain capacity to see just how far over bore this cartridge was. It did very well ballisticly though as it launched a 750 grain Hornady A-Max at 3425 FPS, that translates into 19,545 lbs of energy. Yes that is with 330 Grains of powder. I think I woulnd need to buy a new poder trickler to feed that one[:p]0 -

One of the biggest problems with the "Fat Mac" is that the cases were only good for 1 shot. When fired the shoulder area was collapsed by the gas pressures.
Gale tore the only rifle apart, and sold off it off. AFIK the new owner has never reassembled it0 -
