do people actually collect these things? i recently came across some new in the mailing package that my dad had sent off for back from the late 50's early 60's.i looked over on the auction side they do have some for sale, but they were mostly new and no one was bidding on them.i was just wondering is all.....[:D]

I have seen them sell for 15 to 25 bucks each for older issues, at live auctions. There are collectors out there that buy old firearm related stuff like ammo.,books, owners manuals, signs with brand logos on them.

The genre of material is called ephemera, ie paper relating to guns. And the answer is yes, though collectors seem to be a small, but persistent part of the shooting/collecting scene. I have accumulated some such stuff doing research on old firearms, scopes and such. An owners manual for an old Weaver scope, netted me some correspondence from Bill Weaver. No old Gun Digests for me though, or new ones either.

most paper collectors buy old stuff like that, pull out the gun ads and sell the ads mounted on cardboard and make a killing. 25c investment can net 5.00 a pop for a good ad @ 5-10 ads per mag. they do it for every magazine you can imagine.
problem is, finding the stuff and trying to beat postage because its all so heavy.
but not me, i like reading the stuff and i like having the info on hand for research.

Yes there are collectors that collect every issue of many old and new gun books. Many are sought after due to their contents and even if a certain model firearm is on the cover and they own one like that or collect that model. Most are full of very valuable pictures and info to help the collectors.

I think I became a gun addict after Christmass for soem 10 years in a row going over them cover to cover. My dad was very thoughtful that way. I still have every well worn one.

I don't "collect" them but I am looking for the 1948 edition if anyone sees it. Gift for my father.

Yes, but only all of them up to 2004.

The new ones just suck too much, and they aren't hard to find anyway.
