JUST WEST OF ODESSA, TX.
These two rattlesnakes were photographed east of Kermit Texas, just off the cap, in March of this year. They were going thru their mating ritual when they were photographed! If these two snakes are not big enough to make you watch where you are walking and your surroundings then you are beyond help!!!!

...I walked up on two snakes of some kind doing that on the edge of the ranch lake once, only time I ever saw the ritual...and Ive seen a lot of snakes...[;)]0 -

We don't have many rattlesnakes in my little corner of the world, but I've seen water moccasins do this. Pretty freaky to see their partially intertwined bodies raise straight up out of the water for a second or so before falling over. 0 -

Danny, I will try to find time to get a look tonight, but what I think you are seeing is two males in a combat dance. Likely there is a female around somewhere. Glad you did not step on her![:0] Two and sometimes thee males will engage in trying to push each other to the ground. The eventual winner gets a weekend with the lady of his dreams.
Mating pairs are much less obvious coiled together rather quitely with only the last few inches doing any moving.0 -

Only a very, very irresponsible parent would not attend and watch a child in diamondback country. I was born and raised there and knew from my earliest memories to watch for them and not to try tp pick one up. but hey, I had responsible parents.

Has happened, but it's rare, and knowledgable campers/hunters know how to keep it from happening. Usually, they crawl into a sleeping bag when it's empty, then someone crawls in with them. A simple bag check solves that one.

Or a million other senarios, all of which require a little knowledge of snakes and camping. If you are clueless or careless, I wouldn't suggest camping or walking in snake country.
